An innocent congratulatory message from Magic Johnson went viral for a reason the Los Angeles Lakers star (probably) didn’t intend.

On Wednesday, Golden State Warriors point guard Steph Curry was named the winner of the 2023-24 PBWA Magic Johnson Award. Curry beat out fellow finalists Bam Adebayo, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gobert, and Tyrese Haliburton for the award.

Johnson on Thursday congratulated Curry for winning the award for the second time in his career. Johnson’s post on X went viral for the extra line he added about Steph’s mom Sonya.

“Congratulations to Stephen Curry on winning his second PBWA Magic Johnson Award honoring a player who displays ‘cooperation and grace in dealing with the media and fans’ both on and off the court!” wrote Johnson.

“By the way [Stephen Curry], I had fun hanging out with your mom last night at the Sparks home opener!”

Johnson was more than likely sincere about enjoying his evening of conversation with Curry’s mother. But some fans couldn’t help but fixate on Johnson sounding like he was ribbing Curry about “hanging out” with his mom.

In all fairness to Johnson, the Lakers star may not be the one actually typing out the posts he uploads on X.
