Miami Heat, Arison family donating millions to Hurricane Irma relief

The Miami Heat and the team’s owners are donating millions towards Hurricane Irma relief.

The Heat announced the plans for hurricane relief, which includes an immediate $2.5 million donation from the Arison Family Foundation to Direct Relief, UNICEF and United Way of Miami-Dade County. The Arison Family Foundation comes from Heat team owner Micky Arison and his wife, Madeleine.

Carnival Foundation — the philanthropic arm of Carnival Corporation, of which Arison is the chariman, and the Miami Heat Charitable Fund are pledging to raise a combined $5 million in funding for relief and recovery efforts. The Arison family intends to match up to half the money raised, for $2.5 million. That would put the total donations from the Arison family, Carnival and the Heat at $10 million if all goes well with the fund raising.

Hurricane Irma was a category 5 hurricane that hit the Caribbean islands as well as Florida, causing great devastation. At least 81 deaths have been reported due to Irma as of Thursday.
