Blake Griffin

Blake Griffin does not shake hands with Clippers after losing to former team

Blake Griffin ground

Blake Griffin was not here for the pleasantries after losing to his former team, the LA Clippers.

Griffin’s Detroit Pistons fell to the Clippers at home on Friday by the final of 108-95 in the five-time All-Star’s first game against them since being traded. As the final buzzer sounded, Griffin walked right off the court without shaking hands with the Clippers or even acknowledging any of them.

Griffin, who was traded by the Clippers to the Pistons in a blockbuster deal on Jan. 29, finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in the loss. The handshake snub from him probably isn’t too surprising considering what he had to say about his ex-team after being traded.

Did Blake Griffin shade Clippers in Pistons introduction?

Blake Griffin

Blake Griffin seemed to have a few subtle things to say about the Los Angeles Clippers when he was introduced as a Detroit Piston on Wednesday.

Griffin pointedly said that he had no regrets about not getting a no-trade clause in his contract, because he wanted to play for a team that wanted him — arguably insinuating that he felt the Clippers didn’t feel the same way.

Griffin also said he was excited about being in Detroit because of the excellent fan support — perhaps more focused than it was in Los Angeles.

Griffin said all the right things in his farewell message to Los Angeles. It’s easy, however, to read some frustration and annoyance in his comments on Wednesday.

Blake Griffin Pistons jerseys already a popular item among fans

Blake Griffin Pistons jerseys are a hot commodity in Detroit.

Griffin was not available for the Pistons’ game on Tuesday against the Cavaliers due to the completion of his trade from the Clippers. That didn’t stop the team from getting his new jersey into stores at Little Caesars Arena. According to ESPN’s Nick Friedell, the jerseys are quite popular with fans.

Griffin wore No. 32 with the Clippers. However, the Pistons have retired that number to honor Richard Hamilton. During his collegiate days at Oklahoma, Griffin wore No. 23. As we can see above, he has chosen to go back to that number with his new team.

Blake Griffin reflects on time with Clippers, thanks fans for support

Blake Griffin

Blake Griffin may have been as shocked as the rest of us when the Los Angeles Clippers traded him to the Detroit Pistons on Monday, but he addressed the blockbuster deal after having a night to sleep on it.

In a Twitter post on Tuesday, Griffin reflected on his time with the Clippers and thanked fans and the organization for their support. He also said he is looking forward to beginning the next phase of his career in Detroit.

Griffin, who is averaging 22.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, is likely just the first domino to fall. The Clippers appear to be committed to a total rebuild, and they are reportedly looking to trade at least two of their other top players.

By clearing Griffin’s max salary off the books, the Clippers may be thinking about making a run at the biggest free agent prize on the market this summer.

Lolo Jones takes jab at ‘terrible kisser’ Blake Griffin over bad date

In the past 24 hours, Blake Griffin has had his professional career relocated from Los Angeles to Detroit, where he is now under contract with the Pistons through 2021. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Lolo Jones had to kick Griffin while he was down.

After news broke that Griffin had been traded to the Pistons, Jones commented on an Instagram post from “SportsCenter” about the deal. She first made an April Fool’s reference, but then she admitted to having gone on a date with Griffin. She claims it went horribly.

We have no way of confirming whether Jones and Griffin actually went on a date, but that seems a little too detailed to not be true. Jones, of course, has always been pretty open about her dating life. She recently broke up with an NFL player and made a funny post on social media about it.

There had been rumors that Griffin was dating Kendall Jenner, but it’s going to be hard for him to hang around the Jenner/Kardashian clan now that he isn’t playing basketball in Hollywood. Griffin could be in for a major adjustment period.

Blake Griffin may have to change jersey numbers with Pistons

Blake Griffin

The Detroit Pistons will be welcoming Blake Griffin to the franchise following Monday’s trade, but there may be one hurdle.

Griffin wore jersey number 32 his entire career with the Los Angeles Clippers. Richard Hamilton, who wore jersey number 32 during his career with the Pistons, just had his jersey retired by the team last year.

Hamilton led the Pistons in scoring eight seasons and helped the team win a championship. He certainly earned his jersey retirement from the team.

Had Griffin already been on the team and wearing No. 32 before the retirement, the team likely would have let him keep wearing it and then not give it to anyone else. But since he’s coming to the team with the jersey already retired, some sort of deal will probably need to be worked out if Griffin wants to continue wearing the number.

He’s not the only one who has an issue. Brice Johnson wore number 11 with the Clippers, but that was Isiah Thomas’ number and has been retired by the Pistons. He’s not the superstar that Griffin is, so he’ll almost certainly have to change numbers.

Our guess is Griffin and the Pistons work out a deal for him to continue wearing 32 if that’s what he wants to do. But things could get complicated if Rip decides to pull a Paul Pierce.

UPDATE: Griffin chose to wear his college number, 23, and his jersey is a hot item among fans.

Clippers trade Blake Griffin months after franchise icon free agency pitch

Blake Griffin ground

Blake Griffin showed his commitment to the Los Angeles Clippers by signing a max deal with them during free agency over the summer. And how did they repay him? By trading him to Detroit several months later.

One of the most shocking elements of Monday’s trade that sent Griffin to the Pistons — aside from the lack of rumors preceding it — is that both sides seemed committed to each other. In fact, right after news of the trade came out, many pointed to the free agency pitch the Clippers delivered to Griffin, and how quickly things changed.

A big part of the Clippers’ pitch to convince Griffin to stay with them was that he would be a lifelong Clipper.

They sold him on the idea of him eventually having his jersey retired by the franchise:

They put him on a special T-shirt with other pioneers, like MLK, Abraham Lincoln and President Obama.

And now they’ve traded him a half-season later.

Fans often complain about the lack of loyalty from players when they leave in free agency, but there is another side to that. Teams aren’t always the most loyal, either.

In reality, the Clippers should have rebuilt after losing Chris Paul. This was overdue. And it seems like they will be making more moves, too.

Blake Griffin reacts to trade with funny GIF

Blake Griffin dunk

Blake Griffin reacted to his trade to the Detroit Pistons just about the same way everyone else did.

The lifelong Los Angeles Clippers forward shared this funny GIF that shows Will Smith doing a surprised face:

Translation? Yup, I was just as stunned as you were.

And really, who saw this coming? The Clippers entered the day in playoff contention in the West, and they seemed committed to trying to compete. They also sold Griffin as being a franchise player for the team when they got him to re-sign over the summer. And then they trade him? With no rumors about a potential trade coming? Yeah, that had to surprise everyone.

Now we know what Griffin’s reaction to the trade was. See what everyone else’s reaction looked like.

Report: Clippers also looking to trade DeAndre Jordan, Lou Williams

DeAndre Jordan

Trading Blake Griffin to Detroit on Monday may only be the beginning of the rebuilding process for the Los Angeles Clippers.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who first reported news of the Griffin-to-Detroit trade, says that the Clippers aren’t stopping there. He reports that the team will also look to trade DeAndre Jordan and Lou Williams.

The Clippers also trading Jordan and Williams would make complete sense within the context of a franchise rebuild.

Jordan has a player option for next season and can choose to become a free agent after this season if he wants. Williams is under contract for $7 million this season and is set to become a free agent. He has been a total steal for the Clippers, giving them nearly All-Star levels of production.

This could be the second year in a row that Williams gets traded, as he was dealt to Houston last February.

The Clippers could get more bites on Jordan if he agrees to opt into the next year of his contract, which would give teams more incentive to trade assets for him.

Twitter reacts to shocking Blake Griffin trade

Blake Griffin was traded by the Los Angeles Clippers to the Detroit Pistons in a surprising move that few saw coming.

The Clippers entered Monday as a contender for a playoff spot in the West, while the Pistons were a similar contender in the East. The leadership for each team has decided to go a different way.

The trade means that Griffin will be playing for a different team for the first time in his NBA career, with the Clippers losing a franchise player as they begin the rebuilding process.

Folks on Twitter were no doubt shocked about the trade. Here are some of the reactions:
