Charles Barkley has never been one to back down from criticism of a player, and he’s not about to now.
Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal have been crushing Joel Embiid on TNT throughout the Philadelphia 76ers’ Eastern Conference semifinals series against the Toronto Raptors for performing poorly while ill. They criticized him after Philly’s Game 4 loss and then again after Game 5 of the series.
Embiid addressed the criticism before Game 7 of the series on Sunday, dismissing Barkley’s opinion.
“Charles, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about sometimes,” Embiid said. “He just be saying whatever he wants to.”
Barkley heard the comments and responded before Game 7. Telling Embiid and other players upset with his criticism to kiss his a– led Shaq to lose it.
Embiid didn’t mean his comments maliciously towards Barkley. He did what’s best for him ahead of a game, which is to dismiss it rather than let it get in his head. But Barkley’s attitude about matters is perfect. He’s fair — calling people out when he feels it’s deserved and praising them otherwise.
Either Shaq is a heck of an actor, or the big man is still ticked off at Charles Barkley.
During TNT’s “Inside the NBA” postgame show following Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals between the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night, Barkley went long when doing some analysis, using up most of the time that was allotted for Shaq. Shaq was visibly upset and on the brink of blowing up over Barkley being a ballhog.
Take a look:
A day later, Shaq still looked like he wasn’t happy with Chuck. Here’s how the segment went on Wednesday before the Denver Nuggets-Portland Trail Blazers playoff game.
The way Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith handled that whole thing was superb. This sort of thing is exactly what makes this the best show on TV, and it’s not the first time the two have gotten into it.
Charles Barkley has never been one to mince words if he thinks the quality of the NBA isn’t up to standard, and in his mind, it very much wasn’t on Tuesday.
The Philadelphia 76ers opened up a 60-31 lead over the Brooklyn Nets in the first half of Game 5 of their series, while the Toronto Raptors comfortably dispatched the Orlando Magic in a game that they led by 36 points at one point in the fourth quarter. In other words, neither of Tuesday’s Eastern Conference playoff games were remotely competitive, and Barkley was not afraid to say so at halftime of the Philadelphia blowout.
The NBA and TNT executives would probably prefer it if Barkley tried to give viewers a reason to stay tuned in, but competitive basketball was never going to be it. Besides, his honesty is one of the reasons he’s worth watching, and he’s said things like this before and probably will again.
Charles Barkley recently had some advice for Joel Embiid that he believes will help the Philadelphia 76ers big man get into better shape, but it does not sound like Embiid is going to follow it.
Embiid has a lengthy injury history, and that can make it difficult to stay in peak condition. Barkley suggested that he try taking up swimming as a way to keep his conditioning in the right place without putting too much strain on his body, but Embiid has a good reason for why that is not an option.
Embiid obviously knows what works best for his body, even if we have seen him do some questionable things while being worked on by the Sixers’ training staff. While swimming is a great way to stay in shape, it’s a tough activity if you’re afraid of water.
The Detroit Pistons have given no indication that they are going to put up a fight against the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the NBA playoffs, and most people are confident that is not going to change. But if the Pistons somehow pull off the impossible, we’re all going to see more of Charles Barkley than we ever wanted to see.
After the Bucks dominated Detroit again on Saturday night to take a 3-0 series lead, Barkley said he will perform his duties for TNT “butt a—- naked” if the Pistons come back to win the series.
If Chuck ends up having to show off his tremendous body, the women of San Antonio may have something to come back at him about. Fortunately, there is virtually no change the Pistons are going to come back in the series. They have looked completely overmatched, and it’s unlikely that will change for four games.
Charles Barkley made a wardrobe change on Thursday that resulted in him putting on a funny T-shirt featuring the likeness of Denver Nuggets head coach Mike Malone.
When the “NBA on TNT” broadcast started, Barkley had on a shirt, tie, and jacket as he usually does. During the halftime show of the game between the Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers, Barkley had put on a T-shirt over his outfit. The shirt contained the words “Coach Malone.” Above them was a picture of the Nuggets head coach with his hair in a bun on top of his head, making him look like musician Post Malone.
This wasn’t the only story involving Barkley and a T-shirt on Thursday. A member of the Nuggets arrived to the arena prior to the team’s game against the San Antonio Spurs wearing a shirt with Barkley’s face on it. This seemed to be Chuck’s T-shirt response.
Now we’ll have to see what happens next in the T-shirt showdown.
Jamal Murray showed up to the AT&T Center in San Antonio for Game 3 of the Denver Nuggets’ first round playoff series against the Spurs wearing a Charles Barkley T-shirt, and there is a very good reason for that.
After the Nuggets’ Game 2 win over the Spurs, Murray wore a T-shirt that featured his face on it. The shirt, made by Homage, displays a mock NBA Jam screen that shows Murray and Nikola Jokic as teammates in the video game.
Barkley saw the shirt and commented on it during TNT’s postgame show, saying that was poor form by Murray because you can’t wear a shirt with your face on it.
So how did Murray respond? Never one to shy from a confrontation, he wore a T-shirt with Barkley’s face on it.
You have to appreciate Murray’s sense of humor and quick-thinking in wearing that shirt.
LeBron James as a TNT playoff analyst? It could happen.
After Charles Barkley made a public plea for James to join the rest of the “Inside the NBA” crew for the playoffs, James issued a response on Twitter, and he sounds quite open to it.
James is a busy man, and if he wants to do it, TNT would have to work something out with his people. They’d probably do it, though, since James doing any type of TV work for the playoffs would be a huge draw for the network and would attract a lot of hype. This probably bears watching.
Charles Barkley made his plea on Sunday night for LeBron James to join the TNT crew as a studio analyst during the playoffs, and he did so in a way that only he can.
Appealing to James after the Houston Rockets’ Game 1 win over the Utah Jazz in the first round of the playoffs on Sunday night, Barkley said James should join them because he doesn’t have anything to do with the Los Angeles Lakers eliminated from the postseason.
Of course Barkley joked about LeBron needing to hire a coach and GM for the Lakers, which was a reference to James’ power within the organization.
Surprisingly, Rob Pelinka is running the team’s coaching search, which means James should have even more free time. He’ll probably be spending it working on his movie career. He should drop into TNT for a show or two and give the fans a thrill.
Charles Barkley vs the women of San Antonio remains one of the best rivalries in the NBA.
Barkley zinged San Antonio women yet again with a line he threw out during halftime of Game 1 of the Western Conference first round playoff series between the Houston Rockets and Utah Jazz on Sunday night. The TNT crew was watching the halftime show, which included some incredible acrobatics, leading to Barkley’s line.
Barkley has been taking shots at San Antonio women for years. In 2014, he had some obesity and fat groups upset with him. How do you think the Chuckster responded? Of course he said he was not going to apologize.
