Bill Belichick

Tom Brady has very high praise for Bill Belichick ahead of Super Bowl

Tom Brady Bucs

Tom Brady is preparing to play in his first ever Super Bowl without Bill Belichick, but he has clearly maintained an appreciation for everything he and his former head coach accomplished together.

Brady had extremely high praise for Belichick on Monday. He told the media that he has a “great relationship” with the New England Patriots head coach and would not be where he is today without Belichick’s support.

“I have a great relationship with him,” Brady said. “Again, I’m just incredibly grateful for what he’s meant in my life as a coach. He was everything you could ask for as a player. I had two incredible decades there and my football journey took me to a difference place.

“I certainly could never have accomplished the things in my career without his support and his teaching. He’s an incredible coach and mentor to me. I’ve had a lot of those throughout my career, but obviously he’s at the top of the list.”

Now that Brady has led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Super Bowl in his first season with the team, many feel he has proven he had more to do with New England’s success over the past two decades than Belichick. However, reasonable people know you can’t win six Super Bowls without both a great quarterback and coach.

Brady’s praise of Belichick was timely, as it came just hours after one former Patriots player made some surprising comments about the Patriot Way.

Danny Amendola takes shot at Bill Belichick over ‘Patriot Way’

Bill Belichick

Now that Tom Brady has led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Super Bowl, many people feel he has already proven he was more important to the New England Patriots’ dynasty than Bill Belichick. Danny Amendola certainly feels the six titles his former team has won have a lot more to do with the quarterback than the head coach.

During an appearance on FS1’s “First Things First” on Monday, Amendola was asked if he believes it will be hard for Belichick to get new players to buy in without Brady in New England. The Detroit Lions receiver made it clear he believes Brady made the “Patriot Way” what it is, not Belichick.

“Well first thing’s first, when you see ‘Patriot Way’ in the dictionary, it’s gonna have Tom Brady’s name next to it,” Amendola said. “None of those coaches threw any passes. None of those coaches caught any passes. None of those coaches made any tackles. They got guys in the right position because they watched a lot of film and spent a lot of time at the facility, but Tom Brady is the Patriot Way. That’s the reason why Tom Brady is in the Super Bowl right now and the Patriots aren’t.”

The Brady vs. Belichick debate is pretty useless. The duo won six — that’s right, SIX — Super Bowls together in New England. It’s true that NFL teams are only as good as their quarterbacks, but you need a great coach and a great QB to win that many titles. Even if Brady goes on to win a Super Bowl with the Bucs, that hardly means he would have won six without Belichick in New England.

Of course, Amendola has never seemed like the biggest Belichick fan. We knew that based on the remarks he made about one of Belichick’s most controversial coaching decisions.

Belichick should have several more years to prove he can win without Brady, but there’s no denying that Brady has drastically improved his legacy in his first season away from New England.

Rob Gronkowski reveals big difference between Bill Belichick and Bruce Arians

Rob Gronkowski

Rob Gronkowski is one of the most free-spirited players in the NFL, so it’s not a huge shock he’s getting along well with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s also not terribly surprising to hear what he sees as the biggest difference between his current team and his former team.

Gronkowski was asked by SiriusXM NFL Radio about the differences in personality between Bill Belichick and Bruce Arians, and admitted that the two could not be more different in many ways. He also offered a telling comment about what makes playing for the Buccaneers under Arians so much different.

“Coming here, it’s is a complete 180, for sure, totally different. I mean, I feel like the biggest difference is just having the freedom of being yourself here in this organization,” Gronkowski said.

It’s not terribly surprising to hear this. Belichick and the Patriots operate in a very disciplined way, and players are expected to fit into the team’s culture. Arians and the Buccaneers are simply different and more permissive philosophically. Both ways have clearly bred success.

To be clear, Gronkowski didn’t have a bad thing to say about Belichick, and that feeling seems to be mutual. It’s clear, though, that the Buccaneers’ atmosphere is just a better fit for Gronk’s personality.

Tony Romo has prediction Patriots fans will enjoy

Tony Romo

Tony Romo has developed a reputation for being able to predict the future since he began working as an analyst for CBS, and New England Patriots fans are hoping their team’s offseason will play out the way Romo envisions.

After the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday, Romo said he believes the AFC is going to be “loaded” in 2021. He mentioned all the salary cap space the Patriots have and predicted that Bill Belichick will find a way to build a contending team.

“[The Bills] will be back next year. The AFC is going to be loaded. New England is going to get back in this thing,” Romo said, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “I have a feeling, Belichick, with that much salary cap, they’ll find a way to come back in this thing.”

The Patriots have about $60 million in salary cap space heading into the offseason. For reference, Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said Monday that he feels his team is in a good spot with roughly $15-20 million to spend. As many as half of the teams in the NFL are currently over the cap, meaning they will have to make significant roster moves just to free up money.

Of course, a lot of those teams have a solidified starting quarterback. The Patriots desperately need an answer at the QB position, which will undoubtedly be the theme of their offseason. There has been speculation that they could trade for a Pro Bowl quarterback, but Belichick might be unwilling to give up the draft capital needed to make a move like that.

Belichick certainly has the freedom and money to reshape his roster. New England still finished 7-9 this season even with Cam Newton playing horribly. It’s easy to see why Romo has faith in Belichick given the situation.

Bill Belichick gets meme treatment after Tom Brady reaches Super Bowl

Bill Belichick meme

For now, the winner of the divorce between Bill Belichick and Tom Brady is Brady.

Belichick’s New England Patriots went 7-9 this season and missed the playoffs. Brady went 11-5 with the Bucs and now has Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl.

Many wondered what Belichick was thinking to see his former quarterback make it to the Super Bowl in the first season after their split. The jokes online all had the same consensus: they made Belichick about to be a grump. Many of the memes involved Belichick as Bernie Sanders.

Would we ever know exactly how Belichick feels about Brady reaching the Super Bowl? Probably not. If you were to ask him, he’d say something like “Tom is a great player. But our focus is on the 2021 season.”

You’re not going to get much from him. As for Brady, he’s not taking shots at New England either.

Bill Belichick’s girlfriend makes IG private after Tom Brady comment

Bill Belichick Linda Holliday

Bill Belichick’s longtime girlfriend Linda Holliday found her name in the headlines earlier this week for something she said about Tom Brady, and the backlash has inspired her to make a big social media change.

One of Holliday’s Instagram followers left a comment on her post on Monday criticizing Belichick for letting Brady leave the New England Patriots. Holliday, who has been with Belichick for years, got defensive. She decided to reply and point out that Brady got a ton of help from his defense in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ win over the New Orleans Saints. You can see the exchange below:

“Tom didn’t score last night … not once! Defense won that game,” Holliday wrote. “Were you even watching? OTOH – I’m happy for Tom’s career! Why can’t you be?”

Brady had 199 yards passing, two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown against the Saints. The Buccaneers forced four turnovers, however, and those turnovers led to 21 points. Holliday later clarified that she was referring to that.

“I simply meant he scored with the help of his defense. Why all the fuss people?!? Stop the nonsense!” she wrote, according to TMZ. “Can we all just stop and be happy for Tom for a minute instead of beating me up?!?”

All of the back-and-forth eventually became too overwhelming for Holliday. She later announced that she was making her Instagram page private and explained why.

“I am exhausted by the number of trolls and cruel people who have hammered my social media accounts recently,” Holliday wrote, via TMZ. “I’m not ’embarrassed’ by anything that I’ve said. In fact, several news outlets understood what I meant about defensive TD’s and validated it. BUT, I am tired of trolls!! I’m not sure when it became ok to verbally abuse and harass people on social media. I look forward to staying connected with my personal friends.”

Holliday and Belichick have been together for a long time. Linda has always been extremely supportive of Bill, and you need look no further than some of her past wardrobe choices for proof of that. Unfortunately, the reaction to her comments about Brady was hardly a surprise.

Bill Belichick has policy against this type of move at the goal line

Bill Belichick

Bill Belichick has a policy for his players against making a specific type of move near the goal line.

During Sunday’s AFC Divisional Round playoff game between the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs, Browns receiver Rashard Higgins lost a ball stretching for a touchdown near the goal line. Instead of Cleveland getting the ball near the goal line, Higgins’ lost ball counted as a fumble and touchback.

The play reminded Devin McCourty of Belichick’s policy. McCourt shared on Twitter that Belichick tells his players not to reach the ball out for the goal line.

Belichick believes the risk of a lost fumble near the goal line is not worth the reward. The exception is on fourth down, when Belichick deems it worthwhile.

Higgins did not follow that advice on Sunday.

Bill Belichick turns down Presidential Medal of Freedom honor from President Trump

Bill Belichick

Bill Belichick will not be accepting the Presidential Medal of Freedom honor from President Donald Trump.

Belichick was scheduled to receive the honor from Trump on Thursday in Washington D.C. The medals were established by John F. Kennedy in 1962 and are given to individuals to recognize them for “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

However, the New England Patriots head coach announced in a statement that he would not be accepting the medal.

In the statement, Belichick says he was “flattered” to receive the award. However, he says in light of last week’s event at the Capitol building in Washington D.C., led him to not move forward with the award.

Trump has talked during his presidency and in his presidential run about his close relationship with Belichick.

Bill Belichick to be honored by President Trump

Bill Belichick

Donald Trump has his hands full tying up loose ends before he leaves office later this month, and Bill Belichick is a part of the president’s to-do list.

Trump is planning to award Belichick the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Thurday, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Belichick will be the latest of several sports figures to receive the award from Trump. Hall of Fame golfers Annika Sorenstam and Gary Player and late Olympian Babe Didrikson Zaharias were awarded the Medal of Freedom from Trump last week.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom was established by John F. Kennedy in 1963. It is given to individuals to recognize them for “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

Belichick and Trump have a close personal relationship. Days before the 2016 election, Trump read a letter that Belichick wrote to him at a rally in New Hampshire. The coach was later asked about endorsing the president and said it has more to do with friendship and loyalty than political views.

Trump has bragged about his relationship with Belichick on more than one occasion, so it’s no surprise he is awarding him with a high honor before he leaves office.

Cam Newton has hilarious quote about time spent with Bill Belichick

Cam Newton

Cam Newton has had nothing but positive things to say about Bill Belichick this season, and that has continued even after the quarterback may have played his final game with the New England Patriots.

Newton was asked during his appearance on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” Monday what surprised him most about Belichick as he got to know the coach. The former MVP spoke about how “cool” Belichick is.

“I really thought it was like, ‘Oh my goodness, he’s going to be that sour principal that you never want to see in the hallways.’ He’s so cool, man,” Newton said, via WEEI’s Ryan Hannable. “He’s a guy who, you know, for what it’s worth he seems like that guy you just want to have a drink with. Just sit down and like, ‘Hey man, can I kick it?’ You know what I am saying, ‘Let’s chat.’ I bet he would be so dope at a bar. I mean, he’s got stories out the wazoo.”

Newton may have had a terrible season on the field, but he has enjoyed his time working with Belichick. He has maintained a positive attitude all year and bought into the “Patriot Way” even though the results were disappointing.

Newton finished the season with just 2,657 passing yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. It does not sound like he will be back in New England next year, but there’s clearly plenty of mutual respect between him and Belichick.
