Cam Newton

Here is why Cam Newton could return to Patriots in 2021

Cam Newton

It has been both reported and widely assumed that Cam Newton will not return to the New England Patriots next season. But now that it suddenly seems like the Pats could have trouble attracting free agents, is there a scenario where Bill Belichick could give Newton another shot?

Michael Giardi of NFL Network was asked on Monday if the Patriots will consider bringing Newton back, and the reporter said he would not rule it out. The rationale is that New England did not sign Newton until June last year, which gave him minimal time to learn a complicated offense while juggling coronavirus restrictions. Giardi also noted how few weapons the Patriots gave Newton to work with, especially after Julian Edelman went down with an injury.

“Maybe if they look back on what they did this past season, they’ll decide, ‘We didn’t do enough for Cam to make Cam as comfortable as possible in this offense,'” Giardi said.

There’s no denying that the Patriots put Newton in a tough position. Very few quarterbacks would thrive with Jakobi Meyers as their top wide receiver and no legitimate pass-catching option at the tight end position. That said, a poor supporting cast wasn’t Newton’s only issue.

Newton finished the season with 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He even looked physically limited at times, which is concerning given his history with shoulder problems.

We have heard reports that make it seem like the Patriots could have trouble trading for a starting quarterback or attracting free agents. If their only option is to draft a QB, perhaps they will bring back Newton for another season and see if he can improve in a bridge role.

Adam Schefter offers prediction on where Cam Newton could sign

Cam Newton

Cam Newton did very little this season to prove he can still play at a high level, but is there a chance he could land another starting job in 2021?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter seems to think so. It is unlikely that Newton will return to the New England Patriots next season, and Schefter already has a potential landing spot in mind for the former MVP. The reporter thinks Newton could be a good fit for Washington, and he believes the contract will be respectable, too.

Schefter is obviously very informed, but it’s hard to envision Newton getting that kind of money. The Patriots paid Newton the veteran minimum with incentives, and he responded with 2,657 yards passing, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The contract was viewed as a prove-it deal, and all Newton really proved is that he is nowhere near the player he used to be.

Granted, the Patriots didn’t exactly surround Newton with weapons. They have arguably the worst receiving corps in the NFL. But we can’t forget that they were the only team to offer Newton a clear path to a starting job. Washington has moved on from Dwayne Haskins and Alex Smith’s health remains a concern, but Newton doesn’t seem like the answer — even if he did show crazy commitment with his daily schedule this season.

Newton obviously has a history with Ron Rivera, who coached him for years in Carolina. That could make Washington a sensible landing spot, but the contract figures seem unrealistic.

Cam Newton has hilarious quote about time spent with Bill Belichick

Cam Newton

Cam Newton has had nothing but positive things to say about Bill Belichick this season, and that has continued even after the quarterback may have played his final game with the New England Patriots.

Newton was asked during his appearance on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” Monday what surprised him most about Belichick as he got to know the coach. The former MVP spoke about how “cool” Belichick is.

“I really thought it was like, ‘Oh my goodness, he’s going to be that sour principal that you never want to see in the hallways.’ He’s so cool, man,” Newton said, via WEEI’s Ryan Hannable. “He’s a guy who, you know, for what it’s worth he seems like that guy you just want to have a drink with. Just sit down and like, ‘Hey man, can I kick it?’ You know what I am saying, ‘Let’s chat.’ I bet he would be so dope at a bar. I mean, he’s got stories out the wazoo.”

Newton may have had a terrible season on the field, but he has enjoyed his time working with Belichick. He has maintained a positive attitude all year and bought into the “Patriot Way” even though the results were disappointing.

Newton finished the season with just 2,657 passing yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. It does not sound like he will be back in New England next year, but there’s clearly plenty of mutual respect between him and Belichick.

Report: Cam Newton will not return to Patriots in 2021

Cam Newton

Cam Newton has been a model professional with the Patriots this season and has clearly impressed Bill Belichick with his work ethic. There’s no ignoring how poor his play has been, however, which is why the former MVP’s tenure with New England is almost certainly going to be brief.

Newton is not expected to return to the Patriots next season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on “Sunday NFL Countdown.”

“Both sides enjoyed their relationship, but both sides expect that it will take them to a different place and a different direction in 2021, with Cam Newton likely moving on and the Patriots in search of a new quarterback for next season,” Schefter said.

That is hardly a surprise. Belichick has stuck with Newton as his starter all season, but that says more about the other quarterbacks on the roster. While he has had limited offensive weapons to work with, Newton has been one of the worst players at his position in the NFL this season. He has just 2,415 yards and five touchdown passes compared to 10 interceptions in 14 games.

Newton will likely have trouble finding a starting job this offseason. The Patriots were really the only team that offered him that opportunity in 2020, and he did nothing to prove he is still capable of playing at a high level. Although, his contributions to the team were recognized in other ways. Perhaps that will benefit Newton as he hits free agency again.

Cam Newton wins Good Guy Award with Patriots

Cam Newton

Cam Newton’s play on the field for New England hasn’t gone the way he wanted, but his time off the field is going well.

Newton has received praise for his excellent work ethic and leadership since joining the Patriots. The 2015 NFL MVP even received a nice honor from the media.

Newton was named the 2020 Ron Hobson Good Guy Award winner. That award is given to the Patriots player who is most helpful, available and accommodating to the media.

This is another credit to Newton and his professionalism. It’s also impressive that the media recognized how helpful he was despite him having to follow the Patriot Way.

Newton has only passed for 2,415 yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season, though he has rushed for 12 scores.

Here is Cam Newton’s crazy daily schedule with the Patriots

Cam Newton

Cam Newton has been working his behind off since joining the New England Patriots. A graphic shown during “Monday Night Football” outlined just how hard he is working.

The ESPN graphic showed that Newton wakes up at 4:20 AM, leaves the house 10 minutes later, takes his first sip of coffee at 8:00 AM, and finally goes to sleep at 11:30 PM.

That’s a crazy schedule, mainly because of how long his day his, how little sleep he gets, and how early he rises each morning.

Newton says that it becomes extremely frustrating to work that hard and then not see it translate into positive results on the field.

This schedule helps explain why Newton’s work ethic has been praised since he’s been with New England. The man took a deal for the veteran minimum, is working his tail off, but he’s still not playing very well.

He’s earned tons of respect for the way he’s handled the season. It’s just unfortunate for him it’s not translating on the field.

Bill Belichick gets testy with reporter over Cam Newton questions

Bill Belichick

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has said numerous times this season that he is not going to move on from Cam Newton as the team’s starting quarterback, and he is apparently done answering questions about it.

With the Patriots officially eliminated from playoff contention, ESPN’s Mike Reiss asked Belichick on Wednesday if Newton will remain the starting QB against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. Belichick immediately became annoyed and said “we’re not answering that question every day.” When Reiss pressed further, Belichick told the reporter he’d let him know if the Patriots make a change.

You can read the full exchange below:

While Belichick did not openly say Newton will start, he certainly hinted at it. The coach recently explained why he has stuck with Newton, and it’s unlikely that his stance will change over the last two weeks of the season.

Belichick’s loyalty to Newton may say less about the former MVP and more about backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham. With the recent report we heard about the Patriots’ QB situation heading into 2021, Stidham can’t be feeling confident about his future with the team.

Patriots not interested in bringing Cam Newton back in 2021?

Cam Newton

The New England Patriots have stuck with Cam Newton as their starting quarterback this season despite his consistently erratic play, but it sounds unlikely that he will have another chance to prove himself in 2021.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports was asked in his weekly mailbag if he has any idea who the Patriots’ quarterback will be next season. He confidently said it is “not going to be Cam Newton.”

“I don’t know if their quarterback of the future is on their roster,” Glazer said. “Jarrett Stidham, I really did think they liked him a lot going into this offseason. Until they got Cam Newton, I thought they really thought they could have had a future with Stidham. If that was the case, they’d probably have him in there right now.”

You can hear Glazer’s full comments at about the 3:46 mark below:

Newton signed a veteran minimum deal with the Patriots last offseason that included some incentives. His goal was to prove he is still capable of being a quality NFL starter, and he has not done that. New England didn’t give him many offensive weapons to work with, but Newton has thrown just five touchdown passes all season compared to 10 interceptions. The Patriots were officially eliminated from playoff contention with Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins.

There is one line of thinking that the Patriots could bring Newton back on another cheap deal next season, but he hasn’t even played well enough to justify that. They’re better off starting from scratch. Like Glazer said, Stidham would already be playing if Bill Belichick felt he was the answer.

Newton has held himself accountable all season, but that only takes a player so far. He was also recently thrown under the bus by one of his teammate’s trainers. It seems like a virtual certainty that the 2020 season will be his only in New England.

Patriots WR’s trainer throws Cam Newton under the bus

Cam Newton

Bill Belichick has steadfastly refused to make a quarterback change for the New England Patriots this season. That appears to be rather frustrating for one wide receiver’s personal trainer.

N’Keal Harry has fallen behind Damiere Byrd, Jakobi Meyers, and Julian Edelman in the team’s pecking order, having caught just five passes on nine targets over the past three weeks. Harry’s trainer, Rischad Whitfield, thinks Harry’s struggles are partly the fault of Cam Newton.

“We’ve got a new quarterback. We’ve got to put some of that (expletive) on Cam,” Whitfield told Harry McKenna of Patriots Wire on Tuesday. “Cam hasn’t been the most accurate this year. Like if (Harry) had Tom Brady, Tom Brady would’ve fed him. But we’re back there with Cam and Cam’s getting acclimated to the offense, too.

“It’s a big deal coming from Tom Brady to Cam Newton. … That’s one of Cam Newton’s biggest issues is mechanics.”

Harry, a former first-round pick, has failed to consistently produce for the Patriots. That’s despite Newton working with him and publicly supporting him. If the two aren’t clicking on the field, it certainly doesn’t seem to be for a lack of effort.

One thing is for sure: this isn’t likely to go down well with Bill Belichick. We’ve heard before that he doesn’t always take kindly to the outside influence of personal trainers around the organization, after all.

Bill Belichick explains why he is sticking with Cam Newton

Bill Belichick

Cam Newton had another horrific game in the New England Patriots’ blowout loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night, but Bill Belichick has made it clear the former MVP is not in danger of losing his starting job. The coach stood by Newton immediately after the game and remained just as emphatic after sleeping on it.

Newton was benched for Jarrett Stidham in the second half of the 24-3 loss. Belichick was asked if he has considered making a permanent change at quarterback, and he immediately shut the question down. On Friday, he insisted the decision to put Stidham in against the Rams was purely situational. He also appeared to commit to Newton for the remainder of the season.

Simply put, Newton has been horrible this season. It would be fair to attribute some of that to his sub-par supporting cast, but he has just five touchdown passes compared to 10 interceptions, one of which was a costly pick-six early in Thursday’s game.

Belichick’s insistence on sticking with Newton may say more about his feelings toward Stidham and less about Newton’s performance. If Stidham can’t supplant a quarterback with a 78.9 passer rating, it’s hard to feel good about his future with the franchise.

Belichick recently offered a surprising assessment of the Patriots’ current situation. He likely considers Newton to be a part of that reality. New England needs a long-term solution at quarterback, and it does not seem like that player is on the roster at the moment.
