Arkansas paid San Jose State $1.5 million to beat them

Arkansas Razorbacks

There are few things worse in the college football world than paying a small-time program major money to come beat you, but that’s what happened to Arkansas on Saturday.

The Razorbacks paid San Jose State $1.5 million to visit Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville. Then the Spartans got out to a 24-7 lead and hung on for a 31-24 upset victory. The win made the Spartans 2-1 (they beat Northern Colorado and lost to Tulsa), while Arkansas is now 2-2 (they also lost to Ole Miss).

Chad Morris is in his second season as Arkansas’ head coach and has already lost to three non-power 5 teams.

Getting a $1.5 million pay day is a windfall for San Jose State and funds a significant portion of the school’s athletic department, which is why they agree to travel across the country to visit a tough environment against a team likely to beat them. In 2021, they will receive $1.8 million to visit Georgia. Nothing can be sweeter than getting paid so much and pulling out the win.

San Jose State’s win has now given the Mountain West eight wins over Power-5 teams this season.
