Report: Brian Kelly exploring coaching options

Brian Kelly

Brian Kelly is exploring his coaching options outside of Notre Dame, according to a report.

Yahoo Sports’ Pat Forde says Kelly, whose Fighting Irish had their worst season since he took over as head coach, has reached out through his representatives to test other options.

Kelly took over the job from Charlie Weis in 2010 and led the program to its most success since Lou Holtz. He led the Fighting Irish to a 12-1 record and the BCS National Championship Game during the 2012 season. The program went 10-3 last season too and reached the Fiesta Bowl.

However, Notre Dame went 4-8 this season and suffered some embarrassing losses, such as to Duke and NC State. On top of that, the school was forced this week to vacate wins for academic misconduct during Kelly’s tenure.

The poor record plus the embarrassment of the academic scandal could have some around the school dissatisfied with the coach. Plus, talk like this from recruits wouldn’t sit well with the program.

If Kelly is putting out feelers, one question is for which job or jobs? LSU and Texas named head coaches on Saturday, while Baylor, Houston and Purdue are also available. There aren’t a ton of vacancies at this point.
