Tim Tebow nearly walked off the SEC Nation set on Saturday after Chase Daniel compared Florida to Vanderbilt ahead of the Gators’ primetime game at Auburn.
ESPN’s traveling pregame show was live from Auburn’s campus as the 2-0 Gators prepared for their first trip to Jordan-Hare Stadium since 2011. The matchup also marked Florida’s first SEC game under new head coach Jon Sumrall.
Previewing the Gators, Daniel said, “I do think that Florida could be the next Vandy.”
Tebow, the former Florida quarterback who won a Heisman Trophy and two national championships in Gainesville, immediately objected.
“Chase, you can’t say that,” Tebow said. “That is the most derogatory thing I have ever heard in my life.”
Tebow appeared ready to leave the desk and later covered his face as the line hung in the air.
Daniel, a former Missouri quarterback in his first season on the SEC Nation panel, clarified that he meant Vanderbilt’s surprise 10-win season in 2025. The Commodores finished 6-2 in SEC play and No. 15 in the final AP poll, a program record for victories. He argued that Florida could become this year’s unexpected riser in Sumrall’s first year.
Tebow accepted the intent but not the phrasing.
“I get your point,” he said. “But the wording, ‘Florida could be Vandy?'”
The desk eventually laughed it off. The wording still landed hard. For years Vanderbilt was treated as an SEC afterthought, including during Florida’s championship runs under Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer.
Even a comparison meant as a compliment about a turnaround touched a nerve for a Gators program that has spent more than a decade chasing that standard.
