Colorado cornerback DJ McKinney on Saturday picked the worst time to deliver a cheap shot.
Colorado trailed Kansas 37-21 with just under six minutes left at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. With the Jayhawks facing 2nd-and-13 at their own 26, the Buffaloes needed to force a stop to keep their hopes alive.
However, Colorado saw any chance of a win evaporate when McKinney got into a heated exchange with Kansas wide receiver Lawrence Arnold.
The two exchanged shoves that the referees appeared ready to let go. But with a referee already in between them, McKinney delivered one more shot that got him penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Kansas got an automatic first down and was eventually able to milk the clock until the end of the game. The loss may very well have ended Colorado’s chances of making this year’s expanded College Football Playoff. The Buffaloes entered the game ranked 16th.
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders addressed is entire team in the locker room after the game. Coach Prime did not single out Arnold but rather chastised his whole squad for losing focus against a Kansas team that came in with a 4-6 record.
