Ed Reed hints he would like to be considered for Miami coaching job

The Miami football program has produced countless NFL stars over the years, and one of them might be interested in helping the team turn its recent misfortunes around.

Former Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed, who won a national championship at Miami in 2001, hinted this week that he is thinking about getting into coaching. As it turns out, the Hurricanes have a vacancy in the wake of Al Golden being fired.

“I was like, man, maybe put my name in the mix for a coaching job,” Reed told the Rich Eisen Show, per Graham Watson of Dr. Saturday. “Because it seems like the head coach seems to just manage everybody, manage the game, you know, and try to help the offensive and defensive coordinators make the best decisions.

“I haven’t received a call from a 305 number, just so you know.”

Reed was referring to the Miami area code. The conversation began when Eisen mentioned how football players never really go back to coach their alma maters, which is more common in basketball. Reed, a nine-time Pro Bowler, said he would be all ears if his alma mater wanted to chat.

“I would definitely listen,” he said. “Definitely would go and talk and want to know where they’re trying to go, what they’re trying to do. What they’re looking to do. I would entertain it, yes.”

Miami is coming off a 58-0 home loss against Clemson, so you can understand why there is a sense of panic. We doubt the Hurricanes would ever want Reed as badly as this NFL owner wanted him, but the thought of him taking on a role as a defensive backs coach or something along those lines is intriguing. The U could certainly do worse.
