Gary Patterson changes shirt at halftime, TCU completes comeback win

Gary Patterson TCU

When TCU went into the locker room at halftime of Saturday’s Alamo Bowl, they were trailing Oregon 31-0. The Horned Frogs ended up defeating the Ducks 47-41 in triple overtime, and a change of wardrobe may have had something to do with it.

During the first half, TCU head coach Gary Patterson was wearing a black shirt and black visor. In the second half, he sported a purple shirt and visor.

TCU outscored Oregon 31-0 in the second half, tying the game via a field goal with 19 seconds left in regulation. Of course, the injury to Oregon QB Vernon Adams, who left up 28-0 in the second quarter, halted the Ducks’ production. The Horned Frogs went up for good when quarterback Bram Kohlhausen, who started for the suspended Trevone Boykin, scored a touchdown on an eight-yard run in the third overtime.

The 31-point comeback for TCU matched the largest in bowl history. Patterson said during his postgame interview “The purple shirt works.” Maybe it does, Gary. Maybe it does.
