Kentucky coach trying to hire Ed Reed as assistant

Ed Reed

Kentucky Wildcats head football coach Mark Stoops is trying to make a splash with his next staff addition.

After the current college football season concludes, programs will be able to add a 10th on-field assistant coach. One coach Stoops apparently is eyeing for his next hire is Ed Reed.

Reed was in town and attending a Kentucky basketball game this month. Stoops told Kentucky Sports Radio that he was “working on” trying to hire Reed.

“He and I are close,” Stoops told KSR. “We hadn’t seen each other for a while. He came in town to spend some time.”

Stoops coached Reed in college at Miami. Reed has some experience as he coached DBs with the Buffalo Bills in 2016 on Rex Ryan’s staff. He was not retained when Sean McDermott took over prior to this season.

Stoops previously showed interest in hiring Reed in early 2016, but the former Ravens star went with the Bills instead. Reed had also shown interest in the Miami job in 2015 before Mark Richt was hired.

Maybe Stoops will be able to make it happen with the former 9-time Pro Bowl safety.
