Tennessee is rolling out a 9:00 a.m. happy hour at Neyland Stadium, cutting concession prices — alcohol included — in half for the first hour the gates are open on Saturday.
The promotion is less about brunch beer than crowd control. No. 1 Texas visits for a noon kickoff in what is expected to be one of the largest gatherings in stadium history, and President Donald Trump’s attendance has brought Secret Service screenings to every gate.
Officials are opening the doors a half-hour earlier than usual and are telling fans to arrive significantly sooner than they would for a normal game.
From 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., concession stands will sell food and drinks at 50 percent off. Grab-and-go markets are not part of the deal. The idea is simple: Fill the bowl before lines outside Neyland’s tight concourses become a snarl.
Parking lots open at 6:00 a.m., giving tailgaters three hours before the discount starts. ESPN’s College GameDay is broadcasting outside Ayres Hall from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., then moving inside for the final hour with celebrity guest picker Johnny Knoxville. The show will air on the video boards for anyone already in their seats.
Both teams enter the weekend 3-0. Texas is making its first trip to Knoxville. Tennessee’s pitch to its orange-clad faithful is straightforward: Come early, save a few bucks on a cold one, and be in place when the noise actually matters.
