Psychic Octopus Predicted German Loss

One slimy sea creature was really cashing in on the 2010 World Cup — that is, until Germany lost Wednesday. Paul the psychic octopus correctly predicted all six of Germany’s outcomes, including a 1-0 group play upset defeat at the hands of Serbia and Wednesday’s semifinal defeat to Spain. The eight-legged creature is clearly not afraid to tell fans the future, no matter how harsh it may be for their team. Here’s a video of Paul the Octopus picking Spain to beat Germany via Jimmy Traina’s Hot Clicks:

Here is what owner Oliver Walenciak had to say about Paul’s powers:

It started two years ago at the European Championships when Paul became the oracle for all of Germany’s games and we thought he could do it for the World finals as well. The test is, we have two acrylic boxes with the flag of each team in and some mussels and when he picks the food in one of them, that team will win … We know that all octopus have nine brains so we know he has exceptional powers.”

I don’t think there is anything special about Paul, but I guess if I were from Argentina I would be upset and send along a death threat to the octopus as well. I do take some pleasure, however, in knowing that Germany watched Paul choose Spain on national television before watching the pick prove true when all was said and done on the field. They must have it out for him now also. Hopefully, now that Germany’s run in the World Cup is over Paul won’t, for his own sake, end up on ice.
