49ers admit they had talks about signing Tom Brady

Tom Brady

Tom Brady decided to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency, but he had interest in the San Francisco 49ers prior to making his choice. The 49ers heard about Brady’s interest and admit they talked about adding the future Hall of Famer.

49ers general manager John Lynch told Rich Eisen on Tuesday that he and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had conversations about signing Brady.

“When you’re talking about one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time with Tom Brady, of course you’re going to have some internal discussion,” Lynch told Eisen. “And then you hear rumors that hey, he’d like to come home, that kind of thing.

“So of course Kyle (Shanahan) and I have discussions. We’re always into getting better, so you always look at everything, especially a situation like that. But within a day or two, Kyle and I looked at each other and said, ‘You know what, we really like what we have in Jimmy.’ We love everything that he brings and we really believe it’s a long-term answer. I would tell you we’re more convinced than ever about who our quarterback is in Jimmy Garoppolo.”

This all seems to match up. Chris Simms reported last month that reports of interest between Brady and the Niners all were coming from the quarterback’s side. It also makes some sense for San Francisco to stick with their young quarterback when Brady probably only has a few years at most left in him. But you still should have some skepticism about Lynch’s remarks; a report last month said the general manager had concern about Garoppolo’s ceiling.
