Baker Mayfield facing uncertain future with Browns?
As Baker Mayfield enters the final year of his rookie deal, speculation continues to linger that his starting quarterback role with the Cleveland Browns is not totally secure.
It is “by no means a foregone conclusion” that Mayfield will return to Cleveland in 2022, according to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network. The Browns have no interest in adding a rookie quarterback, as they feel they are built to win now. However, Pauline says the Browns could trade for a “proven veteran” to displace Mayfield.
Whether the Browns can find such a proven veteran is an open question. This suggests that Cleveland might be willing to get involved if someone like Russell Wilson becomes available, but there is no guarantee that happens. Other options like Jimmy Garoppolo could also surface, but it’s not clear if the Browns would view that as a clear upgrade.
The likelihood appears to be that Mayfield remains with the Browns, as Cleveland would need to find a clear upgrade. However, the fact that these whispers continue certainly suggests that it’s no guarantee.
