Brett Maher released by Cowboys; Kai Forbath signed as replacement

Brett Maher

The Dallas Cowboys have finally made the long-awaited kicking change that seemed inevitable.

On Monday, the Cowboys cut kicker Brett Maher and signed veteran Kai Forbath to replace him.

Maher missed a 42-yard field goal in Thursday’s game against the Chicago Bears, which seems to be the last straw. It was far from Maher’s first miss of the season — he had made only 6 of 8 kicks from between 30 and 39 yards, and was a miserable 1-of-5 from between 40 and 49. The problem had grown to the point that the writing appeared to be on the wall Sunday.

Forbath has spent time with five organizations throughout his career. His last full-time role in the NFL was with the Minnesota Vikings in 2017, when he converted 84.2 percent of his field goal tries. More recently, he was a one-game fill-in for the New England Patriots, where he made his lone field goal attempt but missed one of two extra points.
