New England Patriots defensive back Christian Gonzalez is still in the middle of a contract standoff with less than a week to go until the start of the NFL’s regular season. That has led to speculation that he might try to force a trade until he gets a new deal.
Gonzalez largely ducked questions this week about a potential trade demand or holdout. When asked about the possibility, the cornerback simply said he remains a member of the Patriots and is focused on that right now.
“I’m here right now. I’m worried about this practice, focused on this practice,” Gonzalez told reporters. “I’ll always be where my feet are and do what I gotta do.”

Previous reports have suggested that Gonzalez is seeking something similar to the $33 million annual salary the Seattle Seahawks gave Devon Witherspoon, but the Patriots have been unwilling to go there. Until one of the two sides blinks, the standoff is poised to continue, though it remains to be seen whether Gonzalez tries to further force the issue.
Gonzalez, 24, has already made a strong argument to be one of the highest-paid CBs in the league. A former first-round pick by the Patriots in 2023 (No. 17 overall), Gonzalez was an All-Pro in 2024 as well as a Pro Bowler in 2025. Last season for New England, Gonzalez logged 69 combined tackles and 10 passes defended, becoming a cornerstone of the defense that made it all the way to Super Bowl LX against the Seahawks.
