Cincinnati Bengals reportedly were only team to oppose new pass interference rules

Cincinnati Bengals

The NFL’s new rules relating to pass interference were supported by many across the league, though there was one team against them, according to a report.

The New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta reports that the Cincinnati Bengals were the only team to oppose the new rules about making pass interference calls and non-calls reviewable.

This shouldn’t come as a big surprise. Bengals owner Mike Brown either abstains or casts opposing votes for most topics at the league meetings. Though some may call him and the Bengals too old school and non-progressive, I actually side with him here.

Yes, I wish the league hadn’t blown the call in the NFC Championship Game so badly, but this is swinging too far in the extreme. Now you’re allowing almost too much review, which will have perhaps worse consequences than the previous system. What will happen when Hail Mary’s are challenged?

The league should probably make changes so that not all pass interference penalties are spot fouls. I’d like to see two kinds — one for incidental contact which is only 5 yards and not an automatic first down, and spot fouls for egregious cases. The penalties are too harsh for cases where the contact is mutual but called against the defense.
