Colts OC gives players written tests about offense

Indianapolis Colts players are being schooled — quite literally — on their team’s new offense.

Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni is implementing a new offense, and to ensure that the players pick up the concepts, he’s giving them written tests to ensure that they’re getting everything.

“What I feel like it does, it forces them to study,” Sirianni said, via Mike Wells of ESPN. “[It] forces them to study even a little bit more than they would. They’re prideful guys that want to be right. They want to look good in front of their peers. That’s why they’re in the positions that they’re in. I’ve done that for a little [while] and always felt like it worked pretty well, so continued it here.”

Players are quizzed on what other players are doing as well as their own responsibilities to ensure that the playbook is being studied thoroughly and everyone knows what everyone else is doing. Scores are posted publicly, which is fine with receiver Ryan Grant.

“[I got a] 96 and the craziest thing is, I missed the easiest one on the test,” Grant said. “They post [the scores]. Everything is competitive. Behind the scenes [we clown about the scores]. We don’t do it in front of everybody.”

The Colts offense sounds like it might be fun this season, especially if Andrew Luck ends up throwing a football at some point.
