Cowboys have reportedly decided on head coach, concluded search

Jerry Jones

The Dallas Cowboys reportedly know who they are hiring as their next head coach, but it does not sound like they have shared that information with anybody outside the organization yet.

The Cowboys officially announced on Sunday that they are parting ways with Jason Garrett, which was a foregone conclusion after they already began interviewing head coaching candidates. One agent who has a clients looking for coaching jobs told Michael Lombardi of The Athletic that Dallas has already made a decision.

Two candidates, Mike McCarthy and Marvin Lewis, interviewed with the Cowboys over the weekend. No other known interviews have been conducted, though ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Cowboys had a phone conversation with Jeff Fisher recently. Fisher has a close relationship with the Jones family, but it seems highly unlikely that he would get the job after being out of the NFL for three years.

If the Cowboys have, indeed, found their man, you would have to think McCarthy is the favorite. The former Green Bay Packers coach has a Super Bowl win under his belt and \ a 125-77-2 record as a head coach. He has the experience Jones is said to be seeking, which is why college coaches like Lincoln Riley and Matt Rhule seem less likely to get the job.

Lewis would be an extremely unpopular hire among fans, and he has supposedly made some demands that the Cowboys probably won’t cater to.

The Cowboys waited a full week to part ways with Garrett, and there was some belief that they wanted to see what else was out there before officially severing ties. Troy Aikman was highly critical of the team for doing things that way, but it seems like that is the approach Dallas was taking if they truly have already settled on Garrett’s replacement.
