Drake Maye forces OT with play-of-the-year candidate

Drake Maye celebrates a touchdown pass

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye forced overtime in his team’s game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday with one of the most unbelievable plays of the season.

The Patriots were trailing 17-10 and had the ball at the Tennessee 5-yard line with 4 seconds remaining at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. Maye took a shotgun snap on 3rd-and-goal and avoided rushers for more than 10 seconds before finding Rhamondre Stevenson in the end zone for a touchdown.

New England kicked the extra point after the touchdown to send the game to overtime.

According to Next Gen Stats, Maye scrambled for 11.82 seconds before completing the pass. That was the longest time to throw on a touchdown pass behind only Jayden Daniels’ game-winning Hail Mary in Week 8.

Unfortunately for Maye, the magic wore off in overtime. The Titans got the ball first and had to settle for a field goal, so Maye had an opportunity to lead a game-winning drive. He wound up throwing a game-ending interception on a deep ball instead.

The Patriots fell to 2-7 with the loss, but Maye has at least injected some excitement back into the franchise.
