Jaguars hire Super Bowl-winning head coach

Doug Pederson at a press conference

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a new head coach, and it’s one with a successful resume.

The Jags are hiring Doug Pederson as their new coach, ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported on Thursday.

Schefter says Pederson has already spoken with Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Pederson, a former NFL quarterback, was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2016-2020. He led them to a Super Bowl win over the Patriots in the 2017 season. He went 42-37-1 in the regular season and 4-2 in the postseason.

The Jags seem like a perfect landing spot for him. He gets Lawrence in Year 2 rather than during all the struggles of Year 1 that Urban Meyer endured. He gets to step in to coach a franchise that has been bad for a long time and only has upwards to go. With the exception of Meyer, the Jags also tend to be fairly patient with their head coaches. This seems like a good fit for both sides.
