Jay Gruden reportedly had to convince Dan Snyder to bench RG3

Daniel Snyder

Here’s something that will come as a shock to NFL fans: Dan Snyder likes to meddle with his football team and be a part of big decisions.

I know, I know — you’re just floored by the this revelation. But Snyder, who has zero previous football coaching experience, was so involved with football decisions last year that he had to be convinced by head coach Jay Gruden to finally bench Robert Griffin III.

Former Redskins employee Chris Russell joined “The Sports Junkies” on 106.7 The Fan Friday and said Gruden had to convince Snyder to let him bench RG3 last season.

“He had to, from what I was told, convince by going into Dan Snyder’s office for several hours last year in late November, to convince Dan why he needed to bench Robert, why he needed to take him out, why he was hurting the game,” Russell reported.

Griffin was eventually benched after Week 12. He started the final three games of the season and went 1-2 in that span.

Russell also shared a report saying that Snyder called up Gruden’s agent during the season to complain that Gruden was “stealing money” by not delivering results. That’s actually by Snyder’s standards when you compare it to the infamous Mike Nolan ice cream story.

We all know that Snyder is a meddling owner who is tough to deal with. That’s a big reason why the team has cycled through so many coaches during his ownership tenure, and also why they haven’t had much success.
