The Joey Porter Jr. saga in Pittsburgh is finally over.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are trading the disgruntled cornerback Porter to the Dallas Cowboys, Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team reported on Wednesday night. Porter is headed to Dallas in exchange for a package that includes a second-round draft pick, Meirov adds.
A former second-round draft pick himself, Porter, 26, had been on the Steelers since 2023. But he was locked in an ugly contract dispute with Pittsburgh this year that had resulted in Porter not even playing in a single game so far.
During his last full season of action in 2025, Porter started 14 games and produced 52 combined tackles, 1.0 sacks, one interception, and 14 passes defended (tied for 12th in the NFL). But this year marks the final year of Porter’s rookie contract, and the former Penn State standout had been holding out for a new contract from the Steelers.
Pittsburgh did not ultimately give Porter that new contract though, choosing instead to make a clean break amidst an increasingly tense stalemate. That will serve as the gain of the Cowboys, who are off to a 1-2 start and currently have a rather decimated secondary.
Cobie Durant, Shavon Revel Jr, and Devin Moore are among Dallas’ cornerbacks who are nursing injuries at the moment. Once Porter, the son of former All-Pro linebacker Joey Porter, gets up to speed, he should be able to start at CB for the Cowboys alongside ex-NFL interceptions leader Daron Bland.
