Josh McDaniels raids Patriots for new assistant coaches

The New England Patriots are going to have a lot of hiring to do with more assistant coaches set to depart.

The Las Vegas Raiders are bringing Patriots WR coach Mick Lombardi aboard as offensive coordinator, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Patriots offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo will also be joining the Raiders under new coach Josh McDaniels.

This sort of exodus is nothing new for the Patriots, who will be used to seeing their assistants move on to other jobs. Still, this is a pretty significant number of coaches to lose in one offseason. McDaniels leaving was significant in itself, and the fact that two Patriots staffers are following him to Las Vegas means the Patriots will have to replace the bulk of their offensive staff.

While we don’t know what Bill Belichick might be thinking in terms of replacements, there is some thought he’ll go with veteran coaches he’s familiar with. That could mean the return of some controversial ex-coaches to New England in 2022.
