Montee Ball cut by Broncos

Montee Ball

The Denver Broncos released Montee Ball on Sunday.

Ball, a second-round pick in 2013, had tumbled down the depth chart during the preseason. The Broncos had high hopes for the former Wisconsin star in his sophomore season last year, but Ball suffered a groin injury in a Week 5 win over the Arizona Cardinals. He didn’t play another down the rest of the season.

C.J Anderson is expected to enter the season as Denver’s lead back in Gary Kubiak’s new offense, which could take a more run-heavy approach. Ronnie Hillman will likely work as the change-of-pace back behind Anderson with Juwan Thompson also getting a few touches here and there.

When it first became clear that the Broncos were likely going to cut Ball, the Dallas Cowboys were rumored to have interest. However, the Cowboys acquired Seattle Seahawks running back Christine Michael in a trade Sunday morning, so it’s unclear if they will still be players for Ball.

Assuming Ball is healthy, he will more than likely find a new home. He’s only 23 and was one of the best backs in the country at Wisconsin, so he’s certainly worth a flier.
