Scot McCloughan still rooting for Washington: ‘I don’t have any grudge’

Scot McCloughan

Former Washington general manager Scot McCloughan was essentially smeared on his way out the door back in March, but he has done nothing but take the high road when asked about his tenure in the nation’s capital.

In an interview with 106.7 The Fan on Tuesday, McCloughan wished Washington nothing but the best.

“There’s good players there, and there’s good character there, there’s good chemistry there,” he said, via Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “And that’s what I tried to build and build and build. I wish I could have been here longer to see it come to fruition, but I can’t, so it is what it is. But still, I’m gonna pull for them. I don’t have any grudge. It is what it is. Again, it’s a marriage that didn’t work.”

If McLoughan did have a grudge, no one would blame him. The former executive has a history of alcohol-related issues, and some media leaks (which likely came from the team) made it seem like that was the reason he was pushed out. Despite that, McCloughan insists the divorce was “mutual.”

“You know, it’s too bad what happened here, but it was mutual. And there’s a lot of good people in this organization, from the ownership down throughout the whole building,” he said. “Players, coaches and [owner] Dan [Snyder] [were] nothing but great to us. It just didn’t work out. And as you guys are well aware, it’s a big business and it just didn’t work out. I hate leaving there because I’ve got so many close friends, not just guys that I drafted but there’s a lot of good people.”

McCloughan is likely biting his tongue because his days of working in NFL front offices are not over. He’s a very respected evaluator of talent, and he has gotten back to running the scouting service that he had before he joined Washington. If what one of his former players said weeks ago is true, McCloughan was treated unfairly toward the end of his time in Washington. Kudos to him for keeping all that to himself.
