Sean Payton calls himself a ‘dummy’ for saying Drew Brees will retire after season
Sean Payton inadvertently created a huge headline on Tuesday when he indicated that Drew Brees is planning to play just one more season in the NFL, but the New Orleans Saints coach insists he does not have any inside information about his quarterback’s career plans.
Payton was discussing Taysom Hill’s role with the Saints during an appearance on ESPN’s “Get Up!” when when he said Brees is “coming back for his final season” in 2020. On Wednesday, the coach told reporters on a conference call that he spoke out of turn.
“That was my fault. It wasn’t a secret I let out the bag.” https://t.co/JNAi0BryJu

Payton noted that Brees contemplated retirement this offseason before deciding to return, so it would make sense if the coach assumed this will be the final year for Brees. Of course, it would also be conceivable that Brees told Payton 2020 will be the quarterback’s last season and Payton let the info slip.
If Brees does decide to retire after next season, we know he has a massive offer waiting for him to begin a new career. He has also spoken about wanting to spend more time with his family, so it would not be a surprise if he hangs up the cleats.
