Steelers ‘confident’ Ben Roethlisberger will be ready for start of season
The Pittsburgh Steelers are optimistic about Ben Roethlisberger’s status for the 2020 season.
Roethlisberger only played in two games last season and underwent elbow surgery in September. The Steelers quarterback said last month that he was planning to be ready for minicamp and OTAs, which are not happening due to the pandemic. Still, he and his coaches expect him to be ready for the season.
Mike Tomlin appeared on NFL Network’s schedule release show Thursday and said the team is “extremely confident” in Roethlisberger being ready.
Our @wyche89 asks Mike Tomlin about his immediate take on the #Steelers schedule. Tomlin says, “I haven’t seen a schedule I didn’t like. Particularly this time of year.”
As for Ben Roethlisberger playing MNF at #Giants Week 1: “We are extremely confident in his readiness.”

Roethlisberger is now 38 and nearing the end of his career. He is under contract through next year and the Steelers do not exactly have a top-line backup, so Roethlisberger obviously still figures deeply in their plans. The team’s general manager doesn’t think Roethlisberger is close to retirement yet.
Pittsburgh has Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges behind Big Ben on the depth chart at quarterback.
