Report: Tony Romo seeking at least $10 million a year in raise from CBS

Tony Romo is seeking a raise as he enters the final year of his broadcasting deal with CBS, and he’s looking for big money according to a report.

Sporting News’ Michael McCarthy reports that Romo wants at least $10 million a year to continue in his role as CBS’ lead analyst on NFL games. Such a salary would make him the highest-paid analyst in the business, earning more than the approximately $7.5 million Troy Aikman receives, and more than what Jon Gruden pulled in.

Romo reportedly signed a 3-year deal that pays him around $4 million per year when he first joined CBS prior to the 2017 NFL season.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback instantly earned rave reviews in his broadcasting debut. His stock as a broadcaster exploded last season as he presciently predicted play after play before it happened.

Romo is funny, enthusiastic, charming, smart, and just completely likable as a broadcaster.

CBS will likely have to step up if they want to keep the QB. They probably have an advantage thanks to the opportunity they gave him first and the way they have set him up for success, but it will cost them. Not only do they have competition from other TV networks who would love to land Romo, but there are also two startup leagues (AAF and XFL) that would want to have him calling their games. Then there are the tech companies that would pay huge sums to get him for their forays into sports streaming.

A report back in January said CBS was planning a pay raise to keep Romo. They should follow through with it — he’s worth it.
