Report: Tony Romo-Jason Garrett relationship strained after speech

Tony Romo

Tony Romo and Jason Garrett used to have a close relationship beyond being just a quarterback and coach. They used to be spotted together during the offseason, but that’s not the case now.

For the first time in his career, Romo is expected to play for another team next season. He had been coached by Garrett since 2007 and spent his entire career in Dallas. Moving on to a new team will obviously cause feelings to change, but the Dallas Morning News’ David Moore traces the fraying of the relationship between Romo and Garrett back to Romo’s highly-praised speech in November.

According to Moore, Romo went to the Cowboys’ vp of public relations to say he wanted to address the media, not Garrett. Moore says Garrett was left in the dark about it.

From Moore’s column:

The Cowboys head coach was put in the position of praising a statement he had no idea his quarterback was going to give. The fact Romo didn’t run his comments by Garrett or inform him as a courtesy was a slap to his authority.

It’s unclear whether the last part about the slap to his authority is strictly Moore’s opinion or whether it’s Moore’s informed opinion. Either way, Romo’s relationship with Garrett likely won’t be repaired until after the QB retires. And it’s not as if Romo has always bowed down to Garrett anyhow.
