Video: Akron punter pulls off slick move against Tennessee

Akron punter with a fake

Akron didn’t have many highlights in their brutal 63-6 loss to Tennessee on Saturday, but their punter did show off a slick move.

Akron was punting on a 4th-and-21 down 35-0 early in the third quarter. Noah Gettman was just about to have his punt blocked, but he showed some great awareness. He tucked the ball down and waited for a Vols player ot go past him. After his fake, he punted the ball away.

The Zips only managed two field goals in the game and didn’t do a whole lot well, but that was a nice play. Gettman had 8 punts for 304 yards in the game, which was good for an average of 38.

Video: Draymond Green got into it with Akron players at Michigan State game

Nobody is immune from Draymond Green’s trash talk, not even [checks notes] college kids nearly a decade-and-a-half his junior.

Video went viral Saturday of the Golden State Warriors star Green trading words with Akron players ahead of their showdown against Michigan State. Green, a Spartans alum, was inducted this weekend into the Michigan State Hall of Fame and stuck around for Saturday’s home game against Akron.

The video showed Green, wearing a dark green hat, in the back of the end zone stepping towards the Akron players and shouting at them along with other members of his entourage. A security or staff member was then seen asking Green and the others to move back. Check it out.

Green must have gotten into Akron’s heads, as they came out and got turned into purée by Michigan State. The No. 14-ranked Spartans blanked Akron, winning by a comical final of 52-0 to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

This is textbook behavior though from the former NBA Defensive Player of the Year Green. We know that he runs his mouth at anybody in his path, be they guys in uniform, guys in suits, and everyone else in between.

Akron makes big hire with new football head coach

Joe Moorhead speaking

The Akron Zips aren’t known for their pulling power in college football circles. That makes their new head football coach even more exciting.

On Saturday, Akron officially announced the hire of Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead as its new head coach. Moorhead is one of the sport’s most respected offensive minds, and has power conference experience in a two-year stint as Mississippi State head coach.

Moorhead replaces Tom Arth, who was fired by Akron in November.

Moorhead does have Akron ties, having spent five years there as an assistant from 2004 to 2008. He put himself on the map with his highly successful two-year tenure as Penn State offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017. He went 14-12 as head coach at Mississippi State, and lost his job there largely due to off-field issues. The 48-year-old still comes with a big reputation and that makes this a coup for Akron, a team coming off a 2-10 season in the MAC.

The timing of Moorhead’s decision to leave his role at Oregon will certainly raise eyebrows. There appears to be some uncertainty hanging over the Ducks’ head coach, and it could have been a consideration for Moorhead when deciding to join the Zips.

Ex-NFL star reportedly a candidate for Akron job

The Akron Zips are among the Division I college football programs with a head coaching vacancy, and they are expected to have numerous candidates they are considering for the job. One name they are considering will be familiar for NFL fans.

According to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, former Ohio State star Eddie George is a candidate for the job.

George, 48, was a Heisman Trophy winner in college and was a four-time Pro Bowler in the NFL with the Oilers/Titans. He is in his first season as Tennessee State’s head football coach and the program is 5-5.

Feldman’s article mentioned about a dozen names that are in consideration for the job. Akron is having financial problems and the football program hasn’t had a winning record since 2015. Putting those two factors together makes the job a tough sell, though coaching in the MAC might be somewhat appealing to at least one of the candidates.

In addition to George, Akron reportedly has another big name on its list.
