Blake Griffin opens up about Clippers trading him

Blake Griffin likely believed he was going to be a Clipper for life when he signed a five-year, $171 contract with the team last summer, but things changed for him in a hurry. Now that he has had time to digest the trade that sent him to the Pistons, Griffin seems to be embracing the newest chapter of his career.

In a candid interview with Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated, Griffin opened up about the Clippers’ surprising decision to trade him. While he insists he is not dwelling on it, there appear to be some hard feelings.

“I haven’t put much thought into it, to be honest. I’ve been so focused on making this transition and [adjusting] to this change that I haven’t put that much thought into it,” he said. “I never want to be in a place where I’m not wanted. Coming here made me realize what a franchise looks like.”

While he may have been trying to pay the Pistons a compliment, that last part seemed like more of an insult to the Clippers than anything. That said, it’s clear Griffin has enjoyed his time in Detroit thus far, even with the team’s playoff hopes evaporating.

“If I wasn’t happy with where I was at or excited to be here, it would take a little bit longer,” Griffin said. “But as soon as I got here to Detroit, the franchise, the way they go about taking care of the players, the way they do everything, is first-class. So, that makes the transition much easier. [Coach] Stan [Van Gundy] and the whole staff has been awesome. I’m not looking back.

Griffin acknowledged that the NBA is a business and that no one should ever feel like the exception, but he hinted on more than one occasion that he was misled by the Clippers.

“You always hear guys say that, ‘Basketball is a business,’ and all that,” Griffin said. “It’s so much different when you have had a relationship with a certain amount of people for so long and been at a place for so long. Someone always promises you this is what we are doing and six months later … It shows people’s true colors. Other than that, at the end of the day, you have to realize it’s a business.”

Regardless of what he says, Griffin has already given us a good indication of how he felt about the trade with the way he acted after his first game against his former team. When a franchise convinces you to sign an extension on the premise that you’re going to retire with them and have your number raised into the rafters, those feelings are natural.

DeAndre Jordan opens up about Blake Griffin trade

DeAndre Jordan

DeAndre Jordan is the last man standing in Clipper Land after Blake Griffin, his best friend on the team, was traded to the Detroit Pistons at the deadline. Now the All-Star center is offering some thoughts on the move.

In an interview with Michael Lee of Yahoo! Sports that was published on Friday, Jordan discussed the Clippers’ recent roster makeover.

“I don’t think anything is too dramatic about it,” said the three-time All-NBA selection. “It was a lot going on. But I just tried to keep my head and roll with whatever happened.”

Jordan then proceeded to comment specifically on Griffin’s departure.

“It sucks because we were teammates for nine years, but the organization decided to go in a different direction and do what’s best for the future of the organization,” he said. “We can only respect that and continue to try to win games. We’re still going to remain friends, I think.”

Jordan also stated in the interview that he is “focused” on the Clippers and is hoping to stay with them for “another ten years.”

As he hinted at, Jordan has been with the team for his entire ten-year career, nine of which were spent next to Griffin in the frontcourt. Jordan, who can become a free agent after this season, was himself dangled by the Clippers at the trade deadline but ultimately remained with the team. Based on this latest interview, it sounds like his relationship with the Clippers is still salvageable, but the same definitely cannot be said of Griffin.

Blake Griffin’s ex in lawsuit: He had ‘toxic’ relationship with Clippers teammates

Blake Griffin is being sued by the mother of his chldren for allegedly abandoning her a week before the former couple was supposed to get married, and the lawsuit the woman filed also contains some juicy information about Griffin’s time with the Clippers.

TMZ reports that Brynn Cameron has filed a palimony lawsuit against Griffin, claiming he is a bad father who has been “cruelly embarrassing his family with his public fawning over Kendall Jenner.” Griffin and Cameron have two children together and were engaged, but Cameron says the star forward called off the wedding at the last second when he became enamored with Jenner.

The lawsuit, which was filed on Valentine’s Day, states that Griffin promised Cameron he would support her and the couple’s two children and convinced her to quit her sports marketing job. The documents include love letters from Griffin thanking Cameron for “all the sacrifices” she has made.

“Cameron was not just the mother of Griffin’s children and their caregiver, she was also a constant support for Griffin — his personal assistant, meal planner, scheduler, stylist, publicist, party planner, nurse, nutritionist, branding expert, therapist, cheerleader, basketball and fitness consultant, and more,” the lawsuit states.

Cameron claims she and her children have been left “homeless and cash-strapped” while Griffin continues to make millions with his NBA salary and endorsement deals. The suit does not state a specific amount of money she is seeking, but it is in the millions.

And there’s some basketball stuff in there, too. Cameron claims in the documents that she advised Griffin on how to be a better leader with the Clippers when he had “mounting tension with Chris Paul” and was not getting along with his teammates. Here’s more:

She continued, “Griffin struggled to be viewed as a leader for the Clippers while Chris Paul was such a vocal presence in the locker room and the media — and was better known for his drive to win and dedication to both team building and family values.”

Brynn says she counseled Griffin to lead in his own way “by setting a standard for hard work.”

She also claims she helped Blake with his communication skills — including how to speak with teammates and coaches when issues would arise.

“The relationship between Griffin and other teammates had become so toxic River had to mediate disputes in private meetings with the players.”

“Griffin did not know how to handle confrontations and would go silent when things did not go his way. To change that dynamic, Cameron would coach Griffin on how to communicate his issues.”

Griffin has been spotted hanging around Jenner a lot over the past several months, but they have never made their relationship official. While they could be just close friends, it’s also possible that Griffin has tried his best to keep his personal life under wraps because of the drama building with his ex.

As we learned after Griffin and Cameron had their first child together, Cameron also has a son with a former NFL quarterback.

Blake Griffin does not shake hands with Clippers after losing to former team

Blake Griffin ground

Blake Griffin was not here for the pleasantries after losing to his former team, the LA Clippers.

Griffin’s Detroit Pistons fell to the Clippers at home on Friday by the final of 108-95 in the five-time All-Star’s first game against them since being traded. As the final buzzer sounded, Griffin walked right off the court without shaking hands with the Clippers or even acknowledging any of them.

Griffin, who was traded by the Clippers to the Pistons in a blockbuster deal on Jan. 29, finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in the loss. The handshake snub from him probably isn’t too surprising considering what he had to say about his ex-team after being traded.

Ten biggest NBA trade deadline takeaways

Isaiah Thomas

As of 3 PM Eastern Standard Time on Thursday, Feb. 8 in the year of our Lord 2018, the NBA trade deadline became history. As we emerge on the other side with the Cavs trading away everyone including the kitchen sink, Lob City giving way to Motor City, and point guards ping-ponging every which way, here is a quick recap of the ten biggest takeaways from all of the hysteria.

1. The Cavs went full 2K GM mode

Enter: Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance Jr, Rodney Hood, George Hill

Exeunt: Isaiah Thomas, Channing Frye, Jae Crowder, Derrick Rose, Iman Shumpert, Dwyane Wade

I’m not screaming, you’re screaming. The Cavs had gone 7-13 in their last 20 games (even after LeBron James ruined the entire state of Minnesota on Wednesday) and were seemingly at each other’s throats every other night. Well, the possibility of James jumping ship in T-minus five months served as their wake-up call and then some at the trade deadline. Cleveland now runs it back with literally half of their roster gone, but by flipping out many of their curmudgeonly 30-somethings for adaptable 20-somethings, the hope is they will get back to competing with the Golden States or even just the Bostons of the world. Sure, they still weren’t able to get anyone to bite on the contracts of Earl Joseph Smith III or Tristan Kardashian. You can’t deny though that this team looks a lot healthier now, both in talent and in temperament alike.

2. The Lakers come out as big winners

Did Blake Griffin shade Clippers in Pistons introduction?

Blake Griffin

Blake Griffin seemed to have a few subtle things to say about the Los Angeles Clippers when he was introduced as a Detroit Piston on Wednesday.

Griffin pointedly said that he had no regrets about not getting a no-trade clause in his contract, because he wanted to play for a team that wanted him — arguably insinuating that he felt the Clippers didn’t feel the same way.

Griffin also said he was excited about being in Detroit because of the excellent fan support — perhaps more focused than it was in Los Angeles.

Griffin said all the right things in his farewell message to Los Angeles. It’s easy, however, to read some frustration and annoyance in his comments on Wednesday.

Blake Griffin Pistons jerseys already a popular item among fans

Blake Griffin

Blake Griffin Pistons jerseys are a hot commodity in Detroit.

Griffin was not available for the Pistons’ game on Tuesday against the Cavaliers due to the completion of his trade from the Clippers. That didn’t stop the team from getting his new jersey into stores at Little Caesars Arena. According to ESPN’s Nick Friedell, the jerseys are quite popular with fans.

Griffin wore No. 32 with the Clippers. However, the Pistons have retired that number to honor Richard Hamilton. During his collegiate days at Oklahoma, Griffin wore No. 23. As we can see above, he has chosen to go back to that number with his new team.

Blake Griffin reflects on time with Clippers, thanks fans for support

Blake Griffin

Blake Griffin may have been as shocked as the rest of us when the Los Angeles Clippers traded him to the Detroit Pistons on Monday, but he addressed the blockbuster deal after having a night to sleep on it.

In a Twitter post on Tuesday, Griffin reflected on his time with the Clippers and thanked fans and the organization for their support. He also said he is looking forward to beginning the next phase of his career in Detroit.

Griffin, who is averaging 22.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, is likely just the first domino to fall. The Clippers appear to be committed to a total rebuild, and they are reportedly looking to trade at least two of their other top players.

By clearing Griffin’s max salary off the books, the Clippers may be thinking about making a run at the biggest free agent prize on the market this summer.

Lolo Jones takes jab at ‘terrible kisser’ Blake Griffin over bad date

In the past 24 hours, Blake Griffin has had his professional career relocated from Los Angeles to Detroit, where he is now under contract with the Pistons through 2021. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Lolo Jones had to kick Griffin while he was down.

After news broke that Griffin had been traded to the Pistons, Jones commented on an Instagram post from “SportsCenter” about the deal. She first made an April Fool’s reference, but then she admitted to having gone on a date with Griffin. She claims it went horribly.

We have no way of confirming whether Jones and Griffin actually went on a date, but that seems a little too detailed to not be true. Jones, of course, has always been pretty open about her dating life. She recently broke up with an NFL player and made a funny post on social media about it.

There had been rumors that Griffin was dating Kendall Jenner, but it’s going to be hard for him to hang around the Jenner/Kardashian clan now that he isn’t playing basketball in Hollywood. Griffin could be in for a major adjustment period.

Blake Griffin may have to change jersey numbers with Pistons

Blake Griffin

The Detroit Pistons will be welcoming Blake Griffin to the franchise following Monday’s trade, but there may be one hurdle.

Griffin wore jersey number 32 his entire career with the Los Angeles Clippers. Richard Hamilton, who wore jersey number 32 during his career with the Pistons, just had his jersey retired by the team last year.

Hamilton led the Pistons in scoring eight seasons and helped the team win a championship. He certainly earned his jersey retirement from the team.

Had Griffin already been on the team and wearing No. 32 before the retirement, the team likely would have let him keep wearing it and then not give it to anyone else. But since he’s coming to the team with the jersey already retired, some sort of deal will probably need to be worked out if Griffin wants to continue wearing the number.

He’s not the only one who has an issue. Brice Johnson wore number 11 with the Clippers, but that was Isiah Thomas’ number and has been retired by the Pistons. He’s not the superstar that Griffin is, so he’ll almost certainly have to change numbers.

Our guess is Griffin and the Pistons work out a deal for him to continue wearing 32 if that’s what he wants to do. But things could get complicated if Rip decides to pull a Paul Pierce.

UPDATE: Griffin chose to wear his college number, 23, and his jersey is a hot item among fans.
