Cody Bellinger has been abysmal in spring training

Cody Bellinger warms up

Cody Bellinger is hoping for a bounce-back season in 2022, but Los Angeles Dodgers fans have to be concerned with what they have seen from the star outfielder.

Bellinger batted just .165 in 95 games last season. It goes without saying that he has worked on making adjustments this winter, but he has appeared just as lost in spring training as he was last year. Bellinger has a whopping 14 strikeouts in 19 at-bats thus far.

Bellinger, the 2019 NL MVP, was so bad last season that there was talk of him being benched. He had to work his way back after having offseason shoulder surgery and suffered another injury early in the year. The assumption was that the injuries played a big role in his struggles, but the spring training numbers say otherwise.

Spring training is, of course, meaningless. However, when you have a player who is looking to turn things around after a disastrous season, that many strikeouts is an ominous sign.

Baseball world reacts to Cody Bellinger’s huge Game 3 home run

Cody Bellinger celebrates home run

Cody Bellinger may have saved the Los Angeles Dodgers’ season with a massive home run on Tuesday night.

The Dodgers entered Game 3 of the NLCS against the Atlanta Braves down 2-0. The Dodgers got out to a 2-0 lead in Game 3 but blew it and fell behind 5-2. They were down to their final five outs of the game and facing a 3-0 deficit in the series.

But then Bellinger gave them life.

Bellinger was facing Luke Jackson with two on and one out in the bottom of the 8th. He jumped on a high 1-2 fastball and sent it over the wall in right center for a tying home run.

What a clutch hit. That was Bellinger’s first homer this postseason, and it could not have been bigger.

Dodger Stadium, which had been quiet, erupted. Fans on Twitter blew up as well with reactions to the huge home run.

The homer undoubtedly gave the Dodgers momentum. The Braves ended up making a pitching change, and it wasn’t long before the Dodgers took the lead. They ended up winning 6-5.

Bellinger batted .165 during a disastrous, injury-filled regular season. The home run might have made up for it all.

Cody Bellinger in danger of losing starting job with Dodgers?

Cody Bellinger

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been very patient with Cody Bellinger all season, but it appears the outfielder may be running out of time to correct his struggles.

Bellinger was not in the lineup for Friday’s game against the San Diego Padres, and manager Dave Roberts suggested that it will be the first of several days off for the outfielder. Roberts did not commit to when Bellinger might return to the starting lineup, either.

The Dodgers have Gavin Lux in left field Friday night, and may be experimenting with other solutions for their playoff run that don’t include Bellinger. The former NL MVP is hitting just .158 with nine home runs on the season, and has struck out 86 times in 82 games.

Bellinger had to come back from offseason shoulder surgery, and suffered another injury early in the season. Those factors may have contributed to his season. He’s still just 26, and has time and talent on his side to get back to where he was. The Dodgers just can’t wait around for it to happen in 2021 with the playoffs looming.

Trea Turner apologizes to Cody Bellinger for leaving him hanging

Cody Bellinger Trea Turner

Trea Turner apologized to Cody Bellinger on Saturday for an embarrassing moment.

Turner slugged his first home run for his new team since being acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers prior to the trade deadline. He received high-fives upon entering the dugout, but he didn’t see Bellinger tried to slap him some skin.

The funny video went viral, because it looked like Turner was ignoring his teammate. Turner thought it was funny and apologized to Bellinger over Twitter.

There are no hard feelings between them. And Bellinger has some great company too.

The Dodgers’ acquisitions of Turner and Max Scherzer have been huge. Scherzer got the win in the team’s 4-3 victory over the Mets on Saturday. The Dodgers are 4-0 in his starts. Turner is batting .352 since being acquired by the team too.

Cody Bellinger’s girlfriend Chase Carter reveals she is pregnant

Cody Bellinger Chase Carter

Cody Bellinger celebrated his birthday on Tuesday, and his girlfriend broke some news too.

Chase Carter revealed when wishing her boyfriend a happy birthday that she was 20 weeks pregnant.

Carter’s announcement means she is halfway to term and likely expecting some time around late November/early December. That would be the offseason, which should help Bellinger be more available for the newborn.

Carter is a model and dated Giancarlo Stanton in 2019. She and Cody went public last year, and she even attended the World Series, which Bellinger’s Dodgers won.

Bellinger, 26, is having a rough season at the plate. The 2019 NL MVP is batting .176 with four home runs this season and dealt with a broken leg. But now he has a baby to look forward to.

Video: Cody Bellinger beats Cubs with walk-off home run

Cody Bellinger

Cody Bellinger has struggled this season for the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he delivered a big hit on Saturday.

Bellinger smacked a walk-off home run off Chicago Cubs reliever Keegan Thompson to give the Dodgers a 3-2 victory. His big hit came on a 3-1 count with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

What a finish.

Bellinger smacked 47 home runs in 2019 and won NL MVP. It’s hard to believe that it’s late June and Bellinger only has two home runs this season. But that one was a big one.

That was Bellinger’s third career walk-off home run. The Dodgers will hope it gets the 25-year-old going.

Video: Cody Bellinger hits grand slam in Dodgers’ 11-run inning

Cody Bellinger

Welcome back to the lineup, Cody Bellinger.

Bellinger drove in six runs as part of the Dodgers’ explosive 11-run first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night. Bellinger capped his big inning with a grand slam to make it 11-1.

Bellinger also had a 2-run single to make it 3-1.

Bellinger missed two months with a fracture in his leg. The 25-year-old returned to the lineup on Saturday. It wasn’t until Wednesday though that he hit his first official home run.

Bellinger entered the game with only two RBIs. He’s already doing a lot of work towards catching up on his missed stats.

How long will Cody Bellinger be out? Dave Roberts gives mixed answers

Cody Bellinger

Cody Bellinger has not played since a collision at first base on April 5, and it’s unclear when he will be back now that a new injury was discovered.

Bellinger was placed on the injured list four days after the collision. He was making progress in his recovery at first. However, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said this week that Bellinger hit a plateau. That led to more tests, which revealed a new injury.

Now, the Dodgers announced that Bellinger has a hairline fracture in his left fibula, which was likely slowing his recovery.

If you’re wondering how long Bellinger will be out, that’s the tricky part.

Earlier on Friday, Roberts said on MLB Network that for him, Bellinger’s injury was “going to be at least another week or two.”

But after the announcement of the hairline fracture, Roberts did not give a timetable.

If Roberts knew of the hairline fracture when he was on MLB Network, that would be a positive sign about how long Bellinger might be out. Dodgers fans could reasonably expect a return at some point after a week or two. But if Roberts didn’t, then that would be bad news, as maybe the injury would take more time.

Bellinger was batting .211 in 14 games this season. The 25-year-old outfielder won NL MVP in 2019 after smashing 47 home runs.

Video: Cody Bellinger loses home run due to unusual baserunning quirk

Justin Turner Cody Bellinger

Cody Bellinger lost credit for a home run on Thursday due to an unusual baserunning quirk.

Bellinger was batting in the top of the third inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Opening Day game against the Colorado Rockies. Justin Turner was on first base.

Bellinger sent a pitch from German Marquez to the opposite field that left fielder Raimel Tapia went back to catch. Tapia appeared to catch the ball, but the ball fell out of his glove and went over the wall for a home run. That should have put the Dodgers up 2-0.

But there was one issue: Turner thought the ball was caught, so he ran from past second base all the way back to first to avoid the double play. As he raced back to first, he passed by Bellinger. Runners are not allowed to pass the baserunner in front of them, otherwise they are out.

What should have been a 2-run home run for Bellinger instead was ruled a solo home run. Turner was credited with the run, while Bellinger was called out at first for an RBI single. Next time, Bellinger should be more careful about not passing the runner in front of him, even if the circumstances were odd.

The Dodgers lost 8-5.

Cody Bellinger out 10 weeks after undergoing shoulder surgery

Cody Bellinger shoulder

Remember when Cody Bellinger hurt his shoulder celebrating his big home run in the NLCS against the Atlanta Braves? He got surgery to address it.

The Los Angeles Dodgers said that Bellinger underwent shoulder surgery in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Bellinger is expected to be out 10 weeks, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. He will begin rehab next week and be able to swing a bat in four weeks.

Bellinger’s home run in the seventh inning helped swing Game 7 of the NLCS in the Dodgers’ favor. The team won that game 4-3 and went on to win the World Series in six games against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Bellinger, 25, won NL MVP in 2019. He batted .239 with 12 home runs and 30 RBIs in the shortened 2020 season.
