Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn responded on Saturday to some harsh criticism from Dallas Stars CEO Jim Lites.
Lites is disappointed with the Stars’ season thus far and ripped into Seguin and Benn, singling them out for their poor play.
“It’s pissed me off,” Lites said on Friday. “What nobody says is what is completely obvious to me: We are getting terrible play from our top two players.”
Lites said that Seguin, usually a top goal-scorer, is not getting dirty the way he needs to. He said Benn has had some poor play that would get many players benched.
Both players were at an optional skate on Saturday and responded. They said they were aware of the comments and they somewhat took the high road in response.
Lites may come off like a jerk to some, but he’s clearly trying to light a fire under his best players. He also says the owner sees things the same way, so maybe he’s taking the heat by being the bad guy.
Dallas entered play on Saturday 19-16-3 with 41 points — barely grabbing the final playoff spot in the West. They’ve only made the playoffs twice since 2008 and are expecting much more out of this year’s squad.
This is not the first time Seguin has faced criticism from a team CEO. There have long been concerns about his focus due to alleged partying.
Could the Dallas Stars be landing a new star player? Well, perhaps they’d like to.
Houston Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt is in Minnesota for the Super Bowl this week, which also happens to be the former home of the NHL’s Minnesota North Stars. Watt was a childhood fan of the team, now known as the Dallas Stars.
The Stars took note of Watt’s words, and offered him a role on defense.
Alas, Watt will probably settle for being healthy for the 2018 NFL season. He’d certainly be an imposing NHL player, though.
Fans on social media went ballistic on Thursday when the Los Angeles Chargers unveiled their new logo, mercilessly taunting the team and expressing outrage over the re-branding. Other pro sports franchises took note, too.
Two of the best tweets we saw poking fun at the new Chargers logo came from NHL teams. First, we had the Tampa Bay Lightning alluding to the fact that the logo looks like a cross between theirs and that of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
As if that wasn’t hilarious enough, the Dallas Stars got in on the fun with this creative shot:
Seriously, it’s hard to believe that logo is the best the Chargers could come up with. They obviously hired experts to help them with their re-brand, and they had one of the best logos and uniforms in the NFL last season. They deserve all the Twitter bashing (read some of the best here) that is thrown their way.
Even the Dallas Stars are getting in on the Manti Te’o fake girlfriend fun. During the third period of the team’s season-opening game on Saturday, cameras in the arena flashed to an empty chair in section 125 and showed it on the jumbotron. The caption was: “Manti Te’o’s girlfriend welcome to the game!”
When the Te’oing trend was established, the invisible girlfriend jokes were pretty funny. Maybe the Stars got some laughs out of this, but it won’t be long before this humor gets old. Unfortunately for Te’o, I don’t think he’ll hear the end of them for years.
