Damian Lillard upset Timberwolves passed over David Vanterpool as coach

Damian Lillard

The Minnesota Timberwolves made a big head coaching move on Sunday night, and Damian Lillard is disappointed with it.

The Timberwolves announced the firing of Ryan Saunders amid a 7-24 campaign, which is the worst record in the league. But then reports said they planned to hire Raptors assistant Chris Finch in his place.

The move is odd, as most of the time when a coach is fired, they are replaced by an interim coach already on the staff. In this case, Minnesota talked with someone outside the organization, who will be taking over midseason. It’s a highly unusual situation.

Lillard was upset that David Vanterpool wasn’t hired instead, considering he’s an assistant already on the staff.

Vanterpool, 47, was an assistant with Lillard’s Blazers from 2012-2017, which explains why Dame is stumping for him.

Vanterpool has been an assistant with Minnesota since 2019. He has interviewed for a few head coaching jobs but has not received one.

Report: Suns to interview two Blazers assistants for head coaching job

The Portland Trail Blazers advanced to the second round of the playoffs on Tuesday night with a 4-1 series win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the impressive performance to start the postseason may be causing teams around the league to take notice of their coaching staff.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Phoenix Suns have requested and received permission to interview Blazers assistant coaches Nate Tibbets and David Vanterpool for their head coaching vacancy.

Wojnarowski reiterated that Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Monty Williams is still the Suns’ top target, but both Tibbets and Vanterpool are expected to receive serious consideration for head coaching jobs.

It sounds like Williams could also be the top choice for the Los Angeles Lakers, so the Suns need to have options beyond him. Given what they have already accomplished thus far this season, it makes sense that the Blazers and their coaches are receiving plenty of attention.

10 hottest NBA head coaching candidates

Jerry Stackhouse
With a number of NBA coaching jobs opening up, teams are already deep into the process of finding new people to lead their teams. In many cases, these candidates are assistants or former NBA coaches who didn’t finish out the year. There are others, too — broadcasters and even a prominent G League coach who is impressing many.

Here are 10 of the hottest names on the NBA head coaching market.

1) Jerry Stackhouse

Despite a lack of NBA coaching experience, Stackhouse is attracting all sorts of interest. The former star guard has been a big success coaching Toronto’s G League affiliate, winning a title with them in 2017. Hiring a first-time coach at the NBA level is always a risk, but the amount of teams that seem sold on Stackhouse — or at least considering him — is impressive. They’re clearly convinced that his G League success could carry over to the NBA.
