Eddy Pineiro only kicker left with Bears after they waive Elliott Fry

Eddy Pineiro has appeared to be in the lead to win the Chicago Bears’ kicking job throughout much of training camp, and he is now another step closer.

The Bears waived kicker Elliott Fry on Sunday, which means Pineiro is currently the only kicker remaining on their roster.

The Bears still have time to bring in another kicker before the regular season, and it would not be a surprise if they did that. Pineiro and Fry had been alternating kicker days during during camp, and Pineiro’s performance was more consistent.

Chicago is in desperate need of stability at kicker after Cody Parkey missed several key kicks last season, the most crucial of which wasn’t entirely his fault but ended the Bears’ season. Parkey, who was released not long after the season ended, made just 9-of-13 kicks from 40-49 yards in 2018. The Bears brought in several kickers during their rookie camp that were not impressive, but it’s possible they feel they have seen enough from Pineiro.

Eddy Pineiro in lead for Bears’ kicker job?

The kicker competition with the Chicago Bears is being watched closely this offseason after the struggles the team had at the position last year, and Eddy Pineiro may have the upper hand with roughly a month to go until Week 1.

The Bears had been alternating kicker days during training camp between Pineiro and Elliott Fry, but they had the two go head-to-head over the weekend at Soldier Field. Pineiro seemed to handle it best, as he drilled all 12 of his kicks and hit a 60-yarder that Fry missed. As Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times notes, the nearly 19,000 fans in attendance let out a big roar when Pineiro hit from 60 yards.

“Maybe I’m crazy, [but] I think they’re doing decent,” Bears head coach Matt Nagy said of the competition. “It’s not the game, but they’re doing pretty good.”

For now, it’s up to Pineiro or Fry to impress the coaching staff, and it sounds like Pineiro is off to a better start in training camp.

Raiders shockingly waive kicker Giorgio Tavecchio

The Oakland Raiders have already made a big decision about their kicker for the upcoming season.

The Raiders have waived kicker Giorgio Tavecchio, as first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Michael Gehlkin. The news means the Raiders like rookie Eddy Pineiro for the starting job.

Tavecchio went just 16-for-21 on his field goal attempts last season, which falls below what NFL teams want out of their kicker. He was chosen by the Raiders to replace Sebastian Janikowski last year. It was the 28-year-old’s first career NFL regular season action after years on practice squads.

Pineiro likely winning the job isn’t necessarily a surprise, but what is surprising is the timing of Tavecchio being cut. The move not only came very early in camp, but also on a day when Tavecchio mostly kicked well, according to Gehlken.

Pineiro was an 88-percent kicker at Florida, and known for his strong leg.

Veteran Mike Nugent has also been added to compete with Pineiro.
