Greg Monroe signing for 76ers reportedly not related to Joel Embiid injury

Joel Embiid 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers have signed veteran center Greg Monroe to a rest-of-season contract, and the move comes at a time when Joel Embiid has been sitting out to rest his knee before the postseason. However, one thing apparently has nothing to do with the other.

Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Sixers signed Monroe strictly to add veteran depth, not because they are concerned about Embiid’s long-term health.

Embiid has battled knee soreness all season, but he had an MRI back in February that revealed no structural damage. With the 76ers looking to make a deep playoff run, it makes sense that they are giving the All-Star rest down the stretch.

Greg Monroe reportedly agrees to rest-of-season contract with 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers are gearing up for what they hope will be a deep postseason run, and they are adding a piece to their frontcourt in advance of the playoffs.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reports that veteran center Greg Monroe has agreed to a rest-of-season contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Monroe, 28, has bounced around with a few different teams over the past few years. He most recently spent time with the Celtics, which was his second stint in Boston since last year. The former No. 7 overall pick also appeared in 38 games with the Toronto Raptors this season and averaged 4.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game for them.

The Toronto Raptors are adding a free agent big man to their ranks.

According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, the Raptors are adding Greg Monroe, who split last season between the Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, and Boston Celtics.

Monroe will add depth to the Toronto front court. He’ll grab a few rebounds and is a solid inside scorer as well. His addition likely spells the end of the Lucas Nogueira era for the Raptors.

The Raptors had been the only team linked to Monroe. They needed the depth after dealing Jakob Poetl in the Kawhi Leonard deal, and that’s the role you can expect Monroe to fulfill.

Report: Raptors interested in signing Greg Monroe

After sacrificing some depth in their trade for Kawhi Leonard, the Toronto Raptors could be turning to a well-known veteran to help round out the roster.

TSN Sports’ Josh Lewenberg reported Saturday that Greg Monroe is among the names the Raptors are considering for one of their final available spots.

The 28-year-old Monroe averaged 10.3 points and 6.9 rebounds in 20.4 minutes per game in 2017-18, spending time with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Phoenix Suns, and the Boston Celtics. His value has cratered in recent years, but Toronto could use another frontcourt player after trading away Jakob Poeltl, who played all 82 games for them last season, in the Leonard deal.

The Raps also seem all-in on a title run this coming season, and that may be good news for a player like Monroe, who has had a rough go of things lately.

Greg Monroe signing with Celtics despite Pelicans offering him starting role

Greg Monroe has found a new home after being bought out by the Phoenix Suns earlier in the week, as the center has reportedly reached an agreement with the Boston Celtics.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Monroe will sign a one-year, $5 million contract with Boston. His decision came down to the Celtics and Pelicans, and New Orleans offered him an opportunity to start. However, Boston is in a better position to contend and is able to pay Monroe more than twice as much.

The Pelicans made sense as a suitor for Monroe after DeMarcus Cousins went down, but they landed another big man in a trade on Thursday. Monroe is also from Louisiana, so some believed the thought of a homecoming would entice him.

Monroe, 27, is averaging 10.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game this season. He’s a great addition to the Celtics and should provide them with excellent frontcourt depth.

Celtics, Pelicans mentioned as possibilities for Greg Monroe

Greg Monroe reached a buyout agreement with the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, and there are already some teams being mentioned as a potential landing spot.

Almost immediately after the buyout agreement was reported, multiple reporters said the Boston Celtics were a team to watch for in the Monroe sweepstakes.

The Vertical’s Chris Mannix also mentioned the Oklahoma City Thunder as a possibility.

In addition to the Celtics and Thunder, the Pelicans and Bucks are mentioned as teams that could have interest in Monroe.

Monroe was with Milwaukee prior to being traded to Phoenix. Meanwhile, New Orleans would be a homecoming for the 27-year-old center. The Pelicans could also be interested after losing DeMarcus Cousins to an Achilles injury on Friday.

Greg Monroe bought out by Suns

Greg Monroe was not in the arena on Wednesday night for the Phoenix Suns’ game against the Dallas Mavericks, leading at least one reporter to suggest a buyout could be coming. That report proved to be correct.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Wednesday night that Monroe has been bought out of his contract by the Suns. Arizona radio host John Gambadoro of 98.7 in Phoenix first suggested a buyout was possible.

Monroe came to Phoenix via Milwaukee in the Eric Bledsoe trade in November. He had seen an uptick in playing time since being traded and proved to have some value. He was averaging 11.3 points and eight rebounds per game with Phoenix.

Some contender could have interest in adding him as he could provide frontcourt depth. The Suns likely bought him out after concluding they were unable to get anything for him in a trade.
