Report: Julio Jones was blindsided by Shannon Sharpe phone call

Shannon Sharpe

Julio Jones did something out of character last month when he revealed on live television that he wanted the Atlanta Falcons to trade him. As it turns out, the All-Pro wide receiver did not realize he was taking his trade request public.

Shannon Sharpe called Jones during FS1’s “UNDISPUTED” about two weeks ago and asked him if he wanted to remain with the Falcons. The Pro Bowler, who was on speakerphone, emphatically said, “I’m outta there man.” That was his first public admission that he wanted a trade after months of speculation. You can see the video here.

Many wondered if Jones did not realize he was on the air, and Albert Breer of The MMQB says he is certain that was the case. Breer wrote in his weekly column on Monday that he has it “on good authority that Jones had no clue he was on national TV.”

That makes perfect sense. The Falcons were actively working to trade Jones at the time and undoubtedly wanted the roughly $15 million in salary cap relief they got when they sent the 32-year-old to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The situation was nothing like what Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are dealing with, which is the reason no one understood why Jones would complicate things by talking about it on the air.

It’s unclear if there was a misunderstanding or if Sharpe simply neglected to tell Jones he was on speakerphone during a live TV show. One recent report claimed the incident has become a mess for FOX. Technically, Sharpe may have broken a California law with the phone call.

While we don’t expect Jones to file a formal complaint against Sharpe, he probably is not happy.

This is the second major flub for Sharpe this year. He also recently embarrassed himself when he used a fake quote in an attempt to call out Kevin Durant.

Here is why several teams backed out of Julio Jones trade talks

Julio Jones

Julio Jones was traded to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday in a deal that left many NFL players and fans scratching their heads. However, the surprisingly reasonable price the Titans paid for an All-Pro wide receiver may have had more to do with Jones’ contract than anything else.

According to Peter King of NBC Sports, the Titans were the only ones that were “really serious” about acquiring Jones. Teams like the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks checked in, but they did not want to pay Jones the kind of money he is owed and may seek with a new contract.

In the end, only the Titans were willing to give up draft picks and take on the $38 million Jones is owed over the next three seasons. Other teams wanted Atlanta to eat a portion of the deal.

The Baltimore Ravens also dropped out of the Jones sweepstakes after signing Sammy Watkins in free agency and drafting two receivers, King says.

Jones is 32 and has battled injuries in recent years. His talent is undeniable, but it is obvious that teams are concerned he may have trouble staying healthy and his best seasons could be behind him. The Titans don’t share those concerns, and one player in particular has already proven how excited he is to have Jones as a teammate.

AJ Brown willing to give up jersey number for Julio Jones

AJ Brown

Tennessee Titans wide receiver A.J. Brown made clear that he was willing to do just about anything needed of him to get Julio Jones on the team. Now that it’s happened, he’s looking to follow through.

Brown said Sunday after Jones’ acquisition that he had something “in the works” to ensure that Jones gets the No. 11 that he has worn throughout his entire career.

“I’m in the works with — working with (coach Mike) Vrabel about something, about the number. I tried to switch to No. 1, it didn’t go through,” Brown said. “I’m trying to be a good teammate and look out for him and, you know, let him go out on the right foot.”

Brown added that fans should just hold off on buying jerseys for a bit until the number situation gets cleared up.

“All the jersey purchases should stop for a while,” Brown said. “Just give it like a month until we find out what’s going on.”

Brown giving up No. 11 wouldn’t be a small thing. He’s still the No. 1 receiver on the Titans and looks poised to be a future star. That said, Jones is a legend and a future Hall-of-Famer. It’s also a change from Brown’s recruiting pitch, but it shows how serious he is.

Arthur Blank pays tribute to Julio Jones after trade to Titans

Arthur Blank

The decision to trade away franchise icon Julio Jones had to be a tough one for Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank. Blank paid tribute to Jones in a statement Sunday after the trade was completed.

Blank wished Jones “nothing but the best” with the Titans and said that in the end, Jones would always be a part of the Falcons’ family.

“Julio Jones will always be part of the Falcons story, having set numerous records and creating many great memories for all our fans, including me, since the day we drafted him,” Blank said in his statement. “He has been a fixture on our team for almost half the time I have owned the Falcons. As we both move in another direction, I’m deeply grateful for what Julio has done for our team and what he has meant to our city and, in my mind, he will always be part of the Falcons family. I wish him nothing but the best in Tennessee and throughout his life.”

Jones is hugely respected around the NFL, and it’s telling that few Falcons fans are likely to blame him for the circumstances that forced his departure. After all, just look at what some other players thought of the deal.

Jones departs the franchise as its all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards. He also should have won a Super Bowl with the team if not for the infamous collapse against the Patriots. That’s why the organization was so quick to pay tribute after the deal was announced.

NFL players shocked by return in Julio Jones trade

Julio Jones

The Atlanta Falcons finally pulled the trigger on trading Julio Jones on Sunday, and many people were stunned by the compensation package. The Tennessee Titans were able to acquire Jones without giving up a first-round pick, which seems like a steal given what Jones has accomplished over the past decade.

Jones was traded to Tennessee in exchange for a second-round pick next year. The Falcons also sent their 2023 sixth-round pick to the Titans for Tennessee’s 2023 fourth-round pick. The Falcons had reportedly been seeking a first-round pick, but it doesn’t sound like any team was willing to offer one. Why? Many within the NFL community have no idea.

Blockbuster trades are rare in the NFL, which could help explain why the return is so inconsistent. The biggest surprise with the Jones deal is that the Falcons got a second-round pick last year from the New England Patriots for Mohamed Sanu. For further reference, Brandin Cooks was traded twice for a first-round pick and once for a second-round pick.

Jones is 32 and has battled injuries in recent seasons, so that is a factor. Still, he’s a seven-time Pro Bowler and a true game-changer when healthy. The reactions we saw from his new teammates said it all. If Jones is healthy, he should be a steal for the Titans.

Falcons share great Julio Jones tribute video after trade

Julio Jones

The Atlanta Falcons announced on Sunday that they have traded Julio Jones, and they had a tribute video ready to go after they parted ways with the All-Pro wide receiver.

The Falcons have traded Jones to Tennessee for a second-round pick next year and a fourth-round and sixth-round pick in 2023. Shortly after they made the news official, they shared a touching tribute video to Jones on Twitter.

Jones played 10 seasons in Atlanta and made the Pro Bowl seven times. He has been one of the most dominant wide receivers in football, which is why his new teammates are so ecstatic to have him.

The Falcons freed up more than $15 million in salary cap by trading Jones. They held negotiations with multiple teams, but it’s possible they gave the 32-year-old some say in where he ended up.

AJ Brown, Ryan Tannnehill had awesome reactions to Julio Jones trade

AJ Brown

The Tennessee Titans acquired Julio Jones in a trade on Sunday, and you can probably guess how their top players feel about the move.

The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to a deal to send Jones to Tennessee for draft picks. AJ Brown, who has long been an admirer of Jones, could not contain his excitement and shared an awesome photo on Twitter of him, Derrick Henry, and Jones in a photoshopped Titans jersey. He included a very simple message for the rest of the NFL.

Ryan Tannehill was equally stoked.

Brown was one of several Titans players who openly recruited Jones when the Falcons began shopping the 32-year-old around. He also had a very public show of respect for Jones prior to a game last year.

With Brown and Jones as his top two receiving options and Derrick Henry behind him, Tannehill should be in for a huge year. A quarterback can’t ask for a better wide receiver duo than the one he now has.

Julio Jones traded to Titans from Falcons

Julio Jones

The Atlanta Falcons have finally found a trade partner for Julio Jones, and the All-Pro wide receiver is heading to Tennessee.

The Falcons have agreed to trade Jones to the Titans, the team confirmed on Sunday. Atlanta will get a second-round pick in next year’s draft and swap its 2023 sixth-round pick for Tennessee’s 2023 fourth-round pick.

The Titans emerged as the frontrunner for Jones last week. Several teams had expressed interest, but the Falcons may have allowed Jones to have some input in the trade if the offers were similar.

Jones, who is 32, had said he wanted to go to a team that would give him a chance to win. The Titans should fit that description, and Ryan Tannehill seems like the type of quarterback Jones wanted to play with.

With Jones and A.J. Brown on the outside, Tennessee’s passing attack should be one of the best in the league in 2021.

Report: Julio Jones wants to be traded to team with this type of QB

Julio Jones

Julio Jones doesn’t exactly have a lot of say in who he gets traded to, but if it were up to him, it sounds like the Atlanta Falcons wide receiver has a specific type of quarterback in mind.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Jones would prefer to be dealt to a team with a “big-armed QB” that can connect on a deep ball, allowing Jones to get behind the secondary.

There are a number of contenders with quarterbacks that fit that mold. It’s also fair to say that this could rather easily be seen as a bit of a lack of trust in Matt Ryan to do this for him anymore.

We’ve heard about another quarterback that Jones reportedly wants to play with, though he’s not necessarily who you’d think of when considering quarterbacks with the biggest arms.

Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce seem to want the Chiefs to acquire Julio Jones

Julio Jones

The Kansas City Chiefs have all kinds of offensive talent, but some members of the team seem quite eager to add another big name to the mix.

In separate interviews recently, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Tyreek Hill both expressed their interest in playing with Julio Jones, who is likely to be traded by the Atlanta Falcons.

“I’ll tell you what, I’m intrigued,” Kelce said of playing with Jones on ESPN’s “NFL Live,” via Pete Grathoff of the Kansas City Star. “My eyes are open, I’m peeking at the headlines seeing where it goes. Listen, that’s a game-changer when you talk about guys that can make plays anywhere on the field, full route tree no matter where you put him. I mean that’s a guy that changes the game and changes teams, so I’m interested to see where he lands.”

Speaking at his youth football camp on Friday, Hill echoed similar sentiments.

“If I could play alongside Julio Jones, that would be amazing,” Hill said, via Taylor Eldridge of the Kansas City Star. “I was in high school when he was doing his thing at Alabama, and I’ve been a fan ever since. How big he is, how fast he is and how dominant he is, we all know Julio is arguably the best in the game. If I’m able to play alongside Julio, I would love it.”

The Chiefs would certainly be something with Jones in the lineup. His contract is definitely a hindrance, and the team hasn’t really been linked with Jones, but it would certainly be fun to watch.

It sounds like one of Kansas City’s AFC rivals might end up landing Jones instead.
