Warriors honor Kobe, Gianna Bryant with special T-shirts

The Golden State Warriors are paying respects to the late Kobe and Gianna Bryant on Saturday night.

The Warriors are facing the Los Angeles Lakers for the first time since Kobe and Gianna died in a helicopter crash on January 26. They made T-shirts featuring the numbers 2, 8 and 24 and put them on every seat at Chase Center. Kobe wore numbers 8 and 24 wore during his Lakers career, and Gianna wore No. 2 as a player.

Here is a close-up look at one of the shirts via CBS Sports’ Colin Ward-Henninger.

That’s a nice way for the Warriors to honor Kobe and Gianna and show support even though Golden State is a Lakers rival.

There will be a memorial for Kobe and Gianna on February 24 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Friday that the wreckage from the helicopter crash did not show any outward evidence of engine failure.

Kobe Bryant helicopter showed no evidence of engine failure

Kobe Bryant

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others last month, but it appears one possibility has been ruled out.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Friday that the wreckage from the helicopter crash did not show any outward evidence of engine failure. Investigators made that determination after finding a tree branch that was cut at the site of the crash, indicating the helicopters engines were working and rotors were turning at the time of impact.

The helicopter, which was piloted by 50-year-old Ara Zobayan, was not equipped with a device called the Terrain Awareness and Warning System, which warns an aircraft if it is coming too close to the ground. The NTSB has recommended that the system be made mandatory for all helicopters, but the Federal Aviation Administration only currently requires it for air ambulances. Investigators have not yet said whether they believe the system could have helped prevent the crash.

It may take a full year or more before the NTSB’s investigation is complete, but all signs have pointed to weather being a factor in the crash. A chilling video of the helicopter minutes before the tragedy showed that it was flying in very foggy conditions, and audio that was released from before the crash also showed that conditions were not ideal.

Thousands of people are expected to be in attendance at Staples Center and the surrounding area. The Lakers have already paid tribute to Kobe and Gianna in numerous ways, but there are countless fans who are going to want to pay their respects at the memorial service.

Plans from the Los Angeles City Council are reportedly in the works to possibly name a street after Kobe, but it’s unclear when that might happen.

Kobe Bryant was a UFC investor, will be honored at UFC 247

Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant made hundreds of millions of dollars in salary and endorsements during his remarkable NBA career, but he was also a very savvy investor. One of the ways he spent his money in recent years was by purchasing an ownership stake in the UFC, and UFC president Dana White says Kobe was extremely excited about the future of the organization.

White was asked by TMZ this week if the UFC is planning to honor Bryant, who has inspired athletes from all sports. White said there will be a tribute to Kobe at UFC 247 on Saturday night, and White also revealed that Kobe was an investor in the UFC and Body Armour, which is the official energy drink of the UFC.

“Kobe got a distribution from the UFC the Wednesday before the incident,” White said. “He was so pumped up and so excited. He said what everybody always says — I wish I invested more.”

White also said he knew Bryant on a personal level.

“He was a great dude,” White added. “He was a part of this company. Kobe Bryant was a good guy in every way that you could possibly be a good guy.”

Kobe was obviously best known for being a five-time NBA champion, but his impact was felt well outside the basketball arena. We saw an illustration of that with the way he was honored at the Super Bowl, and his involvement with the UFC is further proof.

Gayle King responds after backlash for Lisa Leslie interview about Kobe Bryant

Gayle King

CBS anchor Gayle King responded with a video on Twitter Thursday after she received backlash for a clip of her interview with Lisa Leslie that dealt with Kobe Bryant’s sexual assault charge.

On Tuesday morning, the Twitter account for “CBS This Morning” tweeted out a clip from King’s sit-down interview with Leslie, a 3-time WNBA MVP and Basketball Hall of Famer.

The specific clip they tweeted showed King pressing Leslie on whether Bryant’s sexual assault charge complicates the late basketball star’s legacy. Leslie was adamant that the charge does not diminish Bryant’s legacy and said the media should stop pushing the matter so soon after Bryant’s death.

King started taking heat on social media over the clip. If that two-minute clip was all you saw of the interview, you would have come away with the sense that King was pushing an agenda, and that she was discrediting anything Leslie said because of Leslie’s friendship with Bryant.

Even LeBron James called out King.

After getting so much negative attention, King addressed the matter on social media. She was upset that an isolated clip was shared that did not give the full context of the interview. Her point is that she did not have an agenda to push but that the way the clip was shared and consumed made it seem that way.

Much of the negativity from the black community seems to stem from people upset about one black person going after another rather than standing united. There is also some thinking that King is linked to Oprah, and that they are collectively tougher on famous black people with past issues (Michael Jackson, Kobe) than white ones (Harvey Weinstein).

I disagree with this manner of thinking. When it comes to journalism, it’s not about who’s team/side you’re on, but about fairness. The question to ask is whether King was being fair. In the full context of the interview, which covered more areas — such as Bryant’s personality and connection with the fans — it’s clear King’s agenda was not to go straight after the sexual assault part, meaning she was being fair. Some could say that her telling Leslie she wouldn’t be able to see it because she’s a friend came off strong and may have made some think her comment was agenda-driven. Rather, that crossed me as her being fair to her audience to remind them of Leslie’s bias, but she probably should have said that to Leslie in less certain terms (about her not being able to see it).

I will say the same thing that I said when Washington Post reporter Felicia Sonmez took criticism for bringing up Bryant’s sexual assault charge the day he died. When talking about Kobe’s legacy, the sexual assault case should be included, but if you are being fair, it should not be the sole focus. Sonmez made it her sole focus and displayed an agenda, which is why she was deservedly criticized.

Bryant touched, mentored, taught, entertained, and provided a tremendous amount of joy to the world. He stood for values like family and hard work. So much of what he did is commendable and should be praised. If you are only focusing on the sexual assault charge (which Bryant always disputed and said was consensual), then you are ignoring all his other positive contributions to the world.

There is a reason why a statute of limitations exists for reporting different types of crimes. One of the reasons for this is that after a certain amount of time elapses, it may be in society’s best interest to let everyone move forward rather than bring up painful past issues. Bryant did so much good since the court case, and had become an especially good role model in retirement, that one can reasonably say the sexual assault case was become less and less a part of his legacy.

As for people wondering about the timing — why are people just now rehashing the matter? — the reason is because Bryant died. When a public figure like him dies, writing obituaries and telling the history/legacy of a person includes evaluating these matters. And for the media to evaluate Bryant’s legacy, bringing up the case is part of the story, so long as it’s done in a fair and respectful manner.

The way Sonmez brought it up was not fair; it was agenda-driven. The way King did it was fair. Unfortunately for King, CBS hung her out to dry by isolating that clip and throwing it out there on Twitter like chum for the sharks. They took the bait, and she ended up being the one to pay.

Kobe Bryant had agreed to help Dwight Howard in Dunk Contest before his death

Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant was slated to make public amends with a former teammate before his passing.

Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard revealed on Tuesday that Bryant had agreed to come to Chicago to help him out during the Slam Dunk Contest, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN. Howard added that it was “heartbreaking” that he never got a chance to tell Bryant how much he appreciated him.

Bryant and Howard were teammates on the Lakers during the 2012-13 season and famously did not get along. Howard said just days before Bryant’s death though that he wanted the Mamba to be part of his Dunk Contest display.

While it is sad that the moment will never happen now, Howard will almost certainly incorporate a tribute to Bryant as part of his performance just like many others are going to be doing this All-Star Weekend.

Shareef O’Neal shares most important advice Kobe Bryant gave him

Shareef O'Neal

Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal may have openly disagreed about a number of things from the time they played together right up until Kobe’s death, but that did not prevent their two families from becoming extremely close. In particular, Kobe made a huge impact on Shaq’s son Shareef.

Like his father, Shareef was hit hard by the loss of Kobe and Kobe’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna. TMZ asked Shareef this week what the most important advice was that he received from Bryant, and he said Kobe stressed to him the importance of outworking the competition and not trying to fill Shaq’s massive shoes.

“He just told me to always be the best I can be,” Shareef said. “Always try hard and always try to work harder than everyone else ’cause every day you take off, there’s always people trying to get better.

“He just told me to be the best I can be, I don’t have to live up to my dad’s name. I don’t have to live up to anybody’s name. Be the best I can be.”

Shareef, who recently left the UCLA basketball team and is considering a transfer to LSU, said Kobe, Gianna and the seven others who died in a helicopter crash earlier this month will be on his mind every time he plays.

Not long after the crash, Shareef shared a heartbreaking screenshot on social media that showed Kobe had reached out to him that morning to check in on him. Shareef referred to Kobe as “unc” in the post, which was an indication of the close relationship they shared.

LeBron James explains why he chose for his All-Star team to wear No. 2

LeBron James speech

There will be numerous tributes to Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna at the NBA All-Star Game this month, and one of them involves the jersey numbers each team will wear. LeBron James was given the choice of whether he wanted his team to wear No. 2 or No. 24, and he had a great reason for choosing No. 2.

Gianna Bryant wore No. 2 for her youth basketball teams, and LeBron was asked on Monday why he opted for his team to wear her number and not Kobe’s. James simply said “Zhuri,” which is his daughter’s name.

LeBron has three kids — Bronny, Bryce and Zhuri. Zhuri is 5 years old and the youngest. Like many others, LeBron likely cannot fathom the pain of losing a child, and it makes sense that he chose to honor Gianna. The other All-Star team is captained by Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is 25 and does not have any children.

The NBA has made a major format change to the All-Star Game that includes a tribute to Kobe, and the night will surely be another emotional one. It’s very fitting that LeBron — who gave a touching speech about Kobe, Gianna and the others who lost their lives in the helicopter crash last week — is captaining one of the squads.

Chiefs, 49ers honor Kobe Bryant by lining up at 24-yard line before Super Bowl

The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers paid tribute to Kobe Bryant before the kickoff of Super Bowl LIV on Sunday.

A moment of silence was held at Hard Rock Stadium to honor Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, the seven other victims of last Sunday’s helicopter crash, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Chris Doleman. Players from each team lined up at their respective 24-yard line, which was a nod to Bryant’s jersey number.

Tributes to Kobe were seen throughout the day on Sunday. Russell Wilson took part in ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” broadcast, and he wore a Bryant jersey on the set. Richard Sherman also showed respect for Bryant when the 49ers arrived at Hard Rock Stadium.

Richard Sherman arrived to Super Bowl wearing Kobe Bryant shirt

The impact of Kobe Bryant’s death last week was felt far beyond the NBA world, and we saw several illustrations of that at the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Richard Sherman was wearing a shirt with Kobe’s name and number written across the front when the cornerback got off the bus at Hard Rock Stadium before the Super Bowl. The jersey was from an All-Star Game early in Bryant’s career, when he was still wearing No. 8.

Bryant heavily influenced players across all sports, and there are numerous NFL stars who have said he had a huge impact on their careers. Russell Wilson was a guest on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” before the Super Bowl, and he also paid tribute to Kobe.

Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven others died in a helicopter crash last Sunday. There are sure to be several more tributes leading up to and during the Super Bowl.
