The New York Jets need to find ways to improve their offensive line heading into 2020, but they apparently are not in the running for All-Pro offensive tackle Jack Conklin.
Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network reported on Sunday that the Jets are essentially bidding against themselves for Conklin, with a source calling them “the only team willing to give Conklin the money he wants.” However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter says there are many suitors for Conklin, and the Tennessee Titans left tackle is not expected to land with the Jets.

There should be plenty of teams willing to pay Conklin top dollar, as he is only 25 and considered one of the better offensive linemen in football. He would make a nice addition to the Jets or any other team.
Conklin would be a franchise tag candidate, but the Titans have two other key players — Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry — who are also in line for new contracts. The Titans likely have to use the tag on either Tannehill or Henry, which is why Conklin is expected to sign elsewhere.
Former first round pick Josh Doctson has a new team to try to salvage his career with.
The former Washington Redskin has signed with the New York Jets, the team announced Saturday.
This will be the third team of Doctson’s career since he was a first round pick in 2016. Unfortunately, he has largely been a bust. He caught six touchdown passes in 2017 and 44 receptions in 2018, but those are his career highs. The fact that Washington was so eager to part with him despite being thin at the position does not speak well of how they viewed him.
Doctson is little more than a flier for the Jets, and he’s no guarantee to stick there. They’re kind of betting on rediscovering his lost talent, and there will be no harm to them if they fail to do so.
Le’Veon Bell said all the right things in his first season with the New York Jets despite numerous reports that he was not getting along with head coach Adam Gase, but was the star running back doing everything possible to put himself in the best position to succeed?
The Jets have admitted they will listen if teams inquire about trading for Bell this offseason, but it seems unlikely that there will be much interest with Bell entering only the second year of a four-year, $52.5 million contract. Aside from the money, there may be some concern about the condition Bell was in last season. According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the Jets felt Bell gained too much weight and lost some of his explosiveness down the stretch in 2019.
Bell was never really a consistent part of Adam Gase’s offense, and you have to wonder if his conditioning issues — whether real or perceived — played a role in that. He also dealt with a bout of the flu late in the season and said he lost 10 pounds, which factored into his explanation for why he went out bowling when he was deemed not healthy enough to play one week. That could have also been a factor in his lack of explosiveness, though Cimini said there were concerns about Bell packing on pounds rather than shedding them.

Bell recently downplayed any issues he may have had with his head coach and said he expects to remain with the Jets in 2020.
If the Jets can’t trade Bell, both he and Gase will need to put their egos aside and find a way to coexist next season. Bell was one of the biggest difference-makers in football during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and that is why New York paid him so much money. The talent is obviously there, and it’s up to Gase to find more effective ways to utilize it.
The New York Jets are once again in hot water for how they allegedly treated one of their former assistant coaches.
According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the Jets may be forced into arbitration with former offensive line coach and run game coordinator Rick Dennison over tactics that were allegedly meant to force Dennison to quit. The Jets reportedly tried to reassign Dennison to a scouting position they didn’t want him to take in order to compel him to quit, which would have forced him to forfeit roughly $1 million.
Coach Adam Gase reportedly did not discuss the possible realignment with Dennison, either, though Gase publicly claimed he did.
The Jets technically followed the reassignment clause in Dennison’s contract, but attempting to save money by forcing a coach into a different position they don’t want him to take is an unusual move. The Daily News assessed 11 general managers, executives, and agents within the league, and ten felt that the Jets were using underhanded tactics to save money by not paying Dennison.
“They owe him the money,” one source said. “Don’t think other coaches aren’t watching stuff like this. They need to resolve it. They need to stop being the Jets.”
The Jets have been involved in a lot of messy off-field issues during the season. Dennison’s is just the latest that portrays the organization as being cheap and unfair, and it’s not going to help their reputation within the sport.
Jamal Adams is ready to get paid.
The standout safety clarified reports Wednesday that contract extension talks had begun between his agents and the New York Jets. Adams said that the talks were in very early stages, but added that he “fully” expects to receive a new deal this offseason.

Adams had 75 total tackles and 6.5 sacks in 2019, and will enter the final year of his rookie deal in 2020. He’s developed into an All-Pro defensive back, so the Jets will likely feel some urgency to tie him down long-term, and understandably so.
The Jets reportedly explored trade possibilities centered around Adams last season, which the safety did not appreciate. Given Adams’ stated desire to remain with the Jets, it appears he’s past that and eager to sign. It remains to be seen if the Jets feel the same way, but the early indications are that they do.
There has been a lot of talk about the New York Jets wanting to move on from Le’Veon Bell this offseason, and general manager Joe Douglas admitted on Tuesday that they are at least open to trading the star running back.
Bell has three years remaining on the massive contract he signed with the Jets last offseason, and Douglas praised him for his professionalism in his first season in New York. However, the GM said he is not going to turn teams away if they are interested in a potential trade involving Bell.
