Nike released a new ad featuring Tiger Woods and the voice of his late father, Earl Woods. It might be just me but I don’t know exactly what the point of this is or what it does for the company. Here’s the a video of the new Nike Tiger Woods ad featuring his father Earl Woods:
Um, OK so is Nike trying to remind people about Tigers’ “indiscretions”? If I were them I would think that I would want to move past it and make people focus on the here and now rather than the drama of a few months ago. I also find it really creepy that they are using his late father’s voice for this ad. Earl Woods died in 2006 and this ad has got some eerie “beyond the grave” type feel to it and it just really gives me a chill in my spine when I watch.
So with Tiger officially carrying the Nike torch, I wonder what their next move will be after this creepy campaign. Maybe they’ll be changing their slogan from “Just do it” to “Keep it in your pants.”
As if Nike and LeBron James didn’t already take enough heat for going all Communist Russia by confiscating the tape of LBJ getting dunked on, now they seem even worse for causing the stir. Most of the videos making their way around the internet have been pretty crappy quality. My boy HG at You Been Blinded found an excellent quality video — one that looks like it was filmed from a good camera, not a cell phone. That was such a nothing. Think about it — this was a pickup game at a summer camp and LeBron didn’t get dunked on so much as he got dunked around. There was nothing about which they should have been afraid or fearful. Can you say control freaks? That video would have made the rounds on the net but then would have been quickly forgotten. Instead, it’s a permanent blemish on LeBron’s resume (albeit a small one).
Wow, Nike certainly outdid themselves with this one. They sponsor the best tennis player in the world, and the best golfer in the world. They sponsor two of the most dominant athletes in the world. They sponsor Roger Federer and Tiger Woods. Their sponsorship of these two men allowed them to put together this outstanding commercial. I had the pleasure of viewing it just prior to the start of the Wimbledon men’s singles finals between Federer and Rafael Nadal. It is fantastic. Pay close attention to the man doing the voice over, and enjoy:
The commercial is fantastic for several reasons. For one, it’s always cool when you get to see a picture timeline of a future star growing up. Secondly, I knew the voice was familiar, but didn’t realize who it was until the end; how often do you expect Tiger Woods to do a voice over? Third, the commercial pairs two of the most dominant athletes on the planet. Fourth, the commercial also shows the mutual respect and hearty competition that exists between Federer and Woods. And lastly, Tiger gets in that great dig at the end, a playful jab which provides more incentive for Federer to win. What an outstanding commercial, great job by Nike.
