Bruce Arians’ old Odell Beckham quote comes back to haunt him

Odell Beckham Jr at the LSU game

Odell Beckham Jr. certainly looked effective Sunday in the NFC Divisional round, begging the question of whether the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could have used him.

The Los Angeles Rams picked Beckham up in November after Beckham’s release from the Cleveland Browns. The addition paid off Sunday, as Beckham caught six passes for 69 yards in the first three quarters against the Buccaneers.

Beckham was a free agent, so it was theoretically possible for the Buccaneers to pursue him. They never did, but the reason cited at the time looks pretty bad in retrospect. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk unearthed Arians’ quote about not chasing Beckham because of Antonio Brown’s presence.

Arians is being a bit flippant and unserious here, but that doesn’t make it any less awkward in retrospect. Brown, of course, is no longer with the Buccaneers after a late-season meltdown. To make matters worse, the Buccaneers also endured a season-ending injury to Chris Godwin, which thinned their receiver group significantly.

Ultimately, it’s easy to look back in hindsight and say that Tampa Bay should have at least tried for Beckham, but wide receiver didn’t look like a need at the time he was available. Arians’ quote still aged remarkably poorly.

Larry Fitzgerald nailed his Odell Beckham Jr. analysis

Larry Fitzgerald on set

Larry Fitzgerald perfectly nailed his analysis regarding Odell Beckham Jr.

Fitzgerald was a guest on the ESPN2 “ManningCast” broadcast for the NFC Wild Card Game between the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals on Monday night. During his appearance, the former Cardinals receiver praised the way the Rams have been utilizing Beckham’s skills in the red zone.

“I love the way they’re utilizing him in the red zone. He’s such a threat with his lateral quickness, his ability to be able to go up and high-point the football. And also with his catch radius, he’s got one of the best catch radiuses in the game. I love the way the Rams utilize him and feature him in the red zone, because he’s so dynamic,” Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald’s comments came during the Rams’ second possession of the game. A few minutes after Fitzgerald praised the way the Rams were using Beckham, Odell caught a touchdown pass in the exact manner Fitzgerald described.

That shows how well Fitzgerald knows his receivers and their strengths, as well as the way teams are utilizing their players’ strengths.

Beckham had four catches for 54 yards and the touchdown. He also completed a pass for 40 yards in the game.

The only thing Fitzgerald was missing was predicting Odell connecting on a pass he threw.

Odell Beckham Jr. hints on Twitter at some good news

Odell Beckham Jr warms up

Odell Beckham Jr. hinted on Twitter Friday at some big news for the Los Angeles Rams.

The wide receiver tweeted the word “negative” along with a hugging emoji and yawning emoji.

The implication is that Beckham, who previously was in COVID protocols for the Rams, has now tested negative for the virus.

By testing negative, Beckham should be on his way to being cleared to play in the Rams’ game against the Seattle Seahawks. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Sunday, Dec. 19, but it has been moved to Tuesday night on Dec. 21.

The 29-year-old wide receiver has played in four games for the Rams after being let go by the Browns midseason. He has 15 catches for 204 yards and three touchdowns with the Rams this season.

Old Odell Beckham Jr. quote goes viral after positive test

Odell Beckham Jr at the LSU game

One of Odell Beckham Jr’s old quotes seems to have aged extremely poorly.

A Beckham quote from Oct. 2020 went viral this week. At the time, the star receiver told reporters that he did not believe he could contract COVID-19.

“Not in an arrogant way,” said Beckham, per USA Today Sports. “I don’t think COVID can get to me. I don’t think it’s going to enter this body. I don’t want no parts of it, it don’t want no parts of me. It’s a mutual respect.”

Unfortunately for Beckham, the Los Angeles Rams announced on Tuesday that he was one of nine players they had placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reported that Beckham has indeed tested positive for the virus.

The three-time Pro Bowler Beckham did make it a year and some change before his old take got exposed. That is not bad considering how much full-speed action has taken place in the NFL since then.

But the timing is still pretty unfortunate for the Rams, who have shut down their team facilities amid the outbreak. At 9-4, they are in the hunt for both the lead in their division as well as the best record in the NFC. They are scheduled to play the Seattle Seahawks at home on Sunday.

For Beckham, he was just hitting his stride as a member of the Rams. He caught a touchdown on Monday night against Arizona, which was his third straight game with a score. Now he instead becomes the latest star wideout to go viral for a COVID-related mishap.

Odell Beckham Jr in danger of missing Week 13 with injury?

Odell Beckham Jr at the LSU game

Odell Beckham Jr. has been limited in practice this week with an injury, and it is one that could sideline him in Week 13.

Beckham did not practice on Thursday due to a hip injury. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the ailment is not considered serious, but Beckham’s status for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars is “up in the air.”

If Beckham is less than 100 percent and would benefit from rest, it makes sense to keep him out this week. The Jaguars are 2-9 this season and have little chance of beating a hungry Rams team on the road.

Beckham has just 24 catches for 331 yards and a touchdown this season. He has battled a number of injuries in recent years, but it doesn’t sound like the latest will keep him out wrong. According to Troy Aikman, the Rams have bigger issues to address than Beckham’s health.

Davante Adams had funny zinger for Odell Beckham Jr.

Prior to signing with the Los Angeles Rams earlier this year, Odell Beckham Jr. was serious about potentially joining the Green Bay Packers. That didn’t happen and on Sunday, OBJ went up against the Packers and fellow wide receiver Davante Adams.

In the end, Green Bay held onto a 36-28 victory. That sent Los Angeles to 7-4 on the season and 0-3 since Beckham arrived.

But struggling at Lambeau Field is nothing new for Beckham. During his last trip there — a 2016 wild-card game as a member of the New York Giants — OBJ came up small. The Giants were ousted from the playoffs and in a moment of frustration, Beckham put his fist through a locker-room wall.

Despite being sent home with another loss on Sunday, Beckham, who hauled in five receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown, was much more subdued this time around. But that didn’t stop Davante Adams from poking a little fun at him.

Following the game, Adams sent his jersey to the Rams’ locker-room for Beckham with one simple message: No more drywall damage, please.

That jab from Adams came in the aftermath of another haymaker he took at Beckham just days earlier.

“We did talk two days ago, he said he needed a jersey after the game. I told him ‘go get a Cooper Kupp jersey’ since that’s obviously his guy and that’s who he wanted to be with,” Adams told Michael Irvin, referencing OBJ’s decision to sign with the Rams over the Packers.

In the end, it was all in good fun. More fun for Adams than Beckham, but fun for both nonetheless.

“That’s my guy, man. I love Odell. I think he would’ve been a great fit here but I wish nothing but the best for him,” Adams said.

Odell Beckham Jr. planning creative move with Rams salary

Odell Beckham Jr. is only on a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Rams, but he is doing his best to make the most of it.

The star receiver announced in a tweet Monday that he will be receiving his salary from the Rams in Bitcoin. The move is part of a partnership between Beckham and mobile payment service Cash App. He will also be giving away a total of $1 million in Bitcoin to fans pursuant to the partnership.

Beckham is making $750,000 in base salary from the Rams this season with an additional $500,000 signing bonus. His contract with the team also contains another $3 million in incentives.

We previously learned that Beckham’s contract played a part in his ending up with the Rams instead of another top NFC team. With this latest move, it looks like the three-time Pro Bowler will be trying to maximize every penny of that contract.

Odell Beckham Jr, girlfriend Lauren Wood make big announcement

Odell Beckham and Lauren Wood pose together

Odell Beckham Jr. has had some major changes in his life recently, but the biggest one is coming in the near feature.

Beckham’s longtime girlfriend, fitness trainer and Instagram model Lauren Wood, shared some photos on Sunday that revealed she is pregnant. The Los Angeles Rams star was among those who commented on the photos of him and Wood, writing, “Can’t wait baby!” You can see the photos below:

This has obviously been a big year for Beckham. Not only has he joined a Super Bowl contender, he is also expecting his first child.

Wood and Beckham have been together for quite some time. If you remember, Wood had a funny reaction to a wild internet rumor about OBJ last year. We wish them all the best.

Rams had to beat out NFC rivals to land Odell Beckham Jr.

The Los Angeles Rams ultimately landed wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., but it sounds like part of the reason they did was down to who else had interest.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Seattle Seahawks actually made the strongest offer to Beckham in the early stages of his free agency. When the Arizona Cardinals also showed interest, the Rams decided to step up their pursuit, partly to prevent Beckham from landing with an NFC West rival.

Maybe that’s why Pete Carroll seemed so confident about a Beckham pursuit at first.

Ultimately, while it wasn’t a deciding factor, Beckham certainly considered contractual matters when hunting for a new team. That may have been the undoing of one other interested team.

How the Lions played role in Rams signing Odell Beckham Jr.

Odell Beckham Jr warms up

Shortly after being waived by the Cleveland Browns, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. ended up with the Los Angeles Rams. It was reportedly a desired destination for Beckham, but a dream that almost didn’t come to fruition.

While appearing on The Dan Patrick Podcast, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said the Rams didn’t become involved in the Odell pursuit until midway through the process. The reason? The Rams were holding out on another potential waiver claim.

“I would say close. The question was all along if L.A. had an opportunity that’s where he was going to go. I would say [Los Angeles wasn’t involved] until mid-way through the process,” Payton told Patrick.

Los Angeles had placed a claim on former Tennessee Titans receiver Josh Reynolds and were waiting for the process to play out. The Rams were familiar with Reynolds, who played for the team from 2017 through 2020. The Rams lost Reynolds to the Detroit Lions, who were higher on the waiver priority list. It’s no surprise Detroit claimed Reynolds considering the former Rams who are now part of the Lions’ front office.

After the Lions scooped up Reynolds, the Rams dove in on Beckham. The rest, as they say, is history.

Los Angeles inked Beckham to a one-year, fully guaranteed $1.25 million deal. He caught two receptions on three targets for 18 yards in his debut with the team — a 31-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
