Watch: Sam Ehlinger says Texas is back!

Sam Ehlinger

Sam Ehlinger had a message that was music to Texas fans’ ears.

Ehlinger threw for 169 yards and rushed for 64 yards and three touchdowns as the Longhorns dominated Georgia 28-21 to win the Sugar Bowl on Tuesday night. The Texas quarterback was named MVP of the bowl game.

During an interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe after the game, Ehlinger was asked whether the game would be a springboard for the future. That’s when Ehlinger told everyone that Texas was “back!”

Texas had been mired in mediocrity since the end of Mack Brown’s tenure, a far cry from their run between 2001-2009 when they won double-digit games in every season. They had three straight losing seasons under Charlie Strong before Tom Herman took over. They went 7-6 in Herman’s first season, and they finish 10-4 this season with a great bowl win.

Yup, Texas sure does seem to be back.

Sam Ehlinger pays respect to Drew Brees with high school jersey

Texas Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger gave a cool nod to Drew Brees before Texas’ Sugar Bowl game in New Orleans on Tuesday.

Walking into the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, which is where Brees’ Saints play their home games, Ehlinger wore Brees’ high school jersey.

Ehlinger played high school football for Westlake High in Austin, Texas — the same school as Brees. Westlake also produced Ravens kicker Justin Tucker and Eagles quarterback Nick Foles. In fact, the Eagles got their trick play used in the Super Bowl from Westlake High School.

Watch: Sam Ehlinger gets wiped out by Oklahoma blitz for safety

A wild set of plays culminated in an Oklahoma safety during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Big 12 Championship.

The Sooners had just fumbled inside the Texas ten-yard line, giving Texas the ball trailing by three. However, the Oklahoma defense stepped up, opting to blitz Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger on second down. Ehlinger never saw the blitz coming and was taken down in the end zone.

The play was a real killer for Texas, who had just gotten the ball back in a huge emotional swing. It was far from their first major error of the game, too. It was an enormous boost for Oklahoma off the turnover as well, factoring in the reality that their defense has been oft-criticized for being too leaky. This was a big moment for them to have the last laugh.

Texas QB Sam Ehlinger’s family has a crazy weekend of travel ahead

Sam Ehlinger

Being the parents of elite athletes is not always easy, and the weekend of travel that Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger’s family has ahead is a prime example of that.

Ehlinger, of course, will be looking to lead the Longhorns to a Big 12 title in their game against Oklahoma on Saturday. But as Zach Barnett of Football Scoop notes, he isn’t the only member of the Ehlinger family with a big game this weekend. Sam’s younger brother, Jake, is playing in a playoff game on Friday night with his high school in Corpus Christi.

Assuming the Ehlingers want to watch both Jake and Sam play, here’s what their Friday/Saturday travel schedule looks like:

Champagne problems, right?

Rather than drive six-plus hours overnight, the Ehlinger family could always hop on a flight. That might be a better option in this scenario, but we’re sure they have all that figured out. Whatever they decide to do, the exchanges Sam has had with Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray are a good reminder than Saturday’s game can’t be missed. The Ehlingers will almost certainly find a way to be at both.

Sam Ehlinger has funny response to shade from Kyler Murray

Sam Ehlinger

Kyler Murray made it quite clear earlier in the week that he is not the biggest fan of Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger, and Ehlinger seemingly took the high road when asked about his Oklahoma counterpart.

While speaking with the media on Monday, Murray was asked about the reported dustup he had with Ehlinger while shaking hands after the Longhorns beat the Sooners 48-45 on Oct. 6. He was also asked if he respects the Texas QB’s game, and he responded with a chuckle and said he has “no comment on that.”

Ehlinger clearly had his rebuttal ready to go when he met with the media on Tuesday.

With the two Big 12 powerhouses set to meet for the conference championship on Saturday, it doesn’t get much better than a petty war of words between quarterbacks. Oklahoma will be looking to avenge its only loss of the season with a potential berth in the CFB Playoff on the line, but Texas may have a secret weapon this time around.

Kyler Murray does not seem to be a Sam Ehlinger fan

Kyler Murray

Kyler Murray and Sam Ehlinger seem to feel about each other the way many rivals do. Or at least Murray does not seem to be a big fan of Ehlinger.

Ehlinger’s Texas Longhorns beat Murray’s Oklahoma Sooners 48-45 on Oct. 6 for Oklahoma’s only loss of the season. After that game, the two quarterbacks shook hands, and it did not go well, with a report saying the two had a dustup. The teams will meet again on Saturday for the Big 12 Championship Game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Murray spoke with the media on Monday and said he wouldn’t have run up to Ehlinger had Oklahoma won the game. He also was asked how much he respects Ehlinger’s game and gave a no comment.

The video of Murray’s response is more telling:

You think there is a lot on the line for Saturday’s game? You better believe it. Good thing for the Longhorns they’ve brought in a secret weapon.

Texas QB Sam Ehlinger sidelined after aggravating shoulder injury

Sam Ehlinger

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger aggravated a shoulder injury and failed to start the third quarter against Iowa State.

Ehlinger took a nasty hit to the shoulder on a scramble late in the first half and left the game. He appeared on the sideline after halftime, but was still replaced by backup Shane Buechele to start the second half.

With the Longhorns comfortably ahead, there didn’t seem to be much motivation to get Ehlinger back in the game, allowing him to rest and hopefully recover.

Ehlinger took a nasty injury to the same shoulder last month, but thanks to a well-timed bye week, he didn’t miss any further action. Texas has a short week as they play again Friday, which could leave the quarterback’s status in doubt, but it’s a winnable game against Kansas.

Report: Sam Ehlinger’s recovery remains on schedule

Sam Ehlinger

The Texas Longhorns are still looking to get quarterback Sam Ehlinger back as soon as possible, and things are trending in the right direction.

According to Anwar Richardson of OrangeBloods, Ehlinger’s recovery is still according to plan, and he was set to try throwing a real football on Sunday.

Ehlinger remains on course, as he had been during the week, and if there was any silver lining, it’s that the injury came before a bye week. He’ll face a race against time to be ready for the Oklahoma State Cowboys next weekend.

Texas says QB Sam Ehlinger progressing ‘on schedule’

Sam Ehlinger

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger is progressing “on schedule” according to his head coach.

Ehlinger exited Texas’ game against Baylor last weekend on the team’s first possession with a shoulder injury, which was later reported to be a sprained A/C joint. The plan was for Ehlinger to rest and rehab this week with Texas on a bye, and then they would see whether the sophomore would be available for the team’s game against Oklahoma State.

Longhorns head coach Tom Herman said that things are progressing well for Ehlinger so far.

Texas has won six in a row since their loss to Maryland in the season opener. Ehlinger is a big reason why. He has passed for 1,534 yards, 11 touchdowns and two interceptions this season, while rushing for six scores.

Texas would love to have Ehlinger available against the Cowboys, but they will also prepare for backup Shane Buechele to make the start in case Ehlinger is unable to play.

Texas QB Sam Ehlinger shares positive Instagram message after injury news

Sam Ehlinger

Texas Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger shared a positive post on Instagram note on Sunday around the time news about his shoulder injury was reported.

Orangebloods’ Anwar Richardson reports that Ehlinger has a Grade 1 shoulder sprain. Richardson says Ehlinger will rest and rehab and could be throwing by the end of the week. The hope is that Ehlinger will be able to play in Texas’ next game, which is on Oct. 27 against Oklahoma State.

Ehlinger posted a photo of himself on Instagram, with the caption, “God always has a plan, and that plan is about to be a lot of fun.”

Ehlinger hurt his shoulder on Texas’ opening possession against Baylor on Saturday. Shane Buechele came in for him and helped lead the team to victory. Buechele would start against Oklahoma State if Ehlinger were not available.
