Oakland Raiders punter extraordinaire Marquette King certainly came prepared for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
After he pinned the Chargers deep in their own territory with a 59-yard punt in the second quarter, King celebrated by busting out the “Lights Out” dance popularized by former Chargers All-Pro linebacker Shawne Merriman.
Marquette King does Shawne Merriman "Lights Out" dance vs Chargers
This definitely isn’t new behavior for King by any means. But the callback to a player in Merriman who hasn’t played in the NFL sinced 2012 and last suited up for the Chargers in 2010 at least wins King some points for sheer creativity.
Merriman would later respond to King’s antics on Twitter:
Shawne Merriman walked out of an interview with Dan Le Batard and Bomani Jones on ESPN2’s “Highly Questionable” for reasons that are still unclear.
The interview actually was taped last month, but it didn’t air until Tuesday.
Merriman, a former Pro Bowl linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, was promoting his 11th Annual Lights On Foundation Coat Drive. Merriman has long promoted this charity. In past interviews to promote it, he has said he decided to do a coat drive because he was so poor growing up in Maryland that he remembered what it was like not having a coat during winter. He works hard to ensure others don’t have the same experience.
During the taped interview, Le Batard and Jones asked Merriman about his playing career. Things didn’t go as well when they began asking about his relationship with former MTV reality TV star Tila Tequila. As you’ll see in the video, towards the end of the interview, they begin asking Merriman about his life growing up. They obviously wanted to know more about him having two houses burn down while growing up, so they pursued the subject. After a few follow-up questions, Merriman began futzing with his earpiece and then walked out.
To this day, I haven’t seen an explanation from Merriman or his rep about why he walked out of the interview. LBS reached out to his rep for comment and did not receive a response.
“He didn’t like our questions about Tila Tequila. He didn’t like some of our questions,” Le Batard said.
Le Batard also noted that Merriman had some issues with the follow-up questions about the houses burning down, but he and Jones agreed that Merriman gave no hints that the line of questioning was troubling. Le Batard even speculated that Merriman’s publicist was the one encouraging him to end the interview. Le Batard noted that he’d had a previous run-in with the publicist over bankruptcy questions he asked Vince Young during a previous interview.
Apparently aware that the interview was airing on Tuesday, Merriman tweeted this:
I have no idea what WWE Superstars and Divas is, but apparently it was an event that took place in Costa Rica over the weekend. Buffalo Bills linebacker (man, it’s weird saying that) Shawne Merriman was in Costa Rica too, and he was trying to put the moves on the divas, according to wrestler CM Punk. What ensued was an amazing war of words on twitter as I learned in SI Hot Clicks. Luis Arroyave’s Leisure Blog summarizes the entire affair best:
When this story first came down Sunday morning, we gave Shawne Merriman the edge when it came down to whose side to believe between him and Tila Tequila. Sure Shawne’s a roider but Tila’s a grade-A attention whore who also happened to be drunk. That’s a nightmarish combo. Well surprise surprise, it sounds like a drunk-ass Tila caused most of the issues here. From KGTV-San Diego via Pro Football Talk:
Witnesses at Merriman’s home said the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker went to his bedroom with two women.
Sources said Tequila walked into the room and Merriman asked her to join them. However, the sources said Tequila reacted angrily and threatened to have sex with a member of Merriman’s entourage. According to sources, Tequila was intoxicated, and she got naked and attempted to leave the house. Sources told [News 10 reporter] Vara that Merriman, 25, tried to stop the 27-year-old Tequila, and that is when she called 911.
TILA TEQUILA PICS (aka Merriman’s crazy broad)
Yeah, that sounds about right to me. Well Merriman certainly gets what he asked for; you don’t mess around with Tila Tequila if you’re not looking to get into some sort of a mess. And who’s to blame him for suggesting some menage action? Wasn’t Tila’s show a bisexual dating show? Exactly. Drunk ass *****s.
Let’s get this one straight: I care as much about Tila Tequila as Sheriff Department spokesman Jan Caldwell who called the accusing party, “Tina Nguyen.” And if you’re Shawne Merriman, fooling around with a girl best known for starring in a bisexual reality TV show will not earn you sympathy when you get involved in drama — you’ve asked for it. The only question regarding the arrest of Merriman for allegedly choking Tequila is: who is telling the truth? For the answer, let’s go to the tail of the tape:
I’d have to say the clear advantage goes to Merriman. Heck, you go by the way he said it (in his lawyer’s words, of course), and you’d think the guy was a regular American hero! He better hope he’s not facing any punishment from Roger Goodell because returning from knee surgery should already be tough enough. Again, who messes with dumbasses like Tina Tequila anyway unless they’re looking for attention/publicity, be it good or bad?
Goes to Maurice. Not bad for a 5’7″ dude going up against a former steroids offender. Of course, if you ask me, I don’t know how shocked I am by the play. Mo has been underestimated his entire career and is capable of doing anything at this point. And that would include pancaking a ferocious linebacker that outweighs him by 60 pounds:
