Rudy Gay to opt out of contract, become free agent

Rudy Gay Kings

Rudy Gay may be coming off a big injury, but that won’t stop him from trying to cash in this summer.

ESPN’s Marc Spears reports that Gay is planning to opt out of the final year of his contract, which would have paid him $14.2 million, to become a free agent.

Gay, 30, is coming off a torn Achilles’ tendon suffered in January and expects to be back on the court in June. He averaged 18.7 points on 45.5 percent shooting this season for the Kings, his fourth in Sacramento. He has been a consistently high scorer averaging at least 17.2 points per game in every season since his second in the league back in ’07-’08.

Gay had said he was previously undecided about his opt-out season. Kings exec Vlade Divac has previously said he wants to bring Gay back to the team.
