Report: Chase Young took money to pay for girlfriend’s flight to Rose Bowl game

Ohio State Buckeyes superstar and potential No. 1 overall draft pick Chase Young has been suspended for Saturday’s game against Maryland and could be facing a much longer suspension as the result of an NCAA violation.

To some degree, Young owned up to the violation earlier this week, tweeting an apology and attempting to explain the situation, claiming he had accepted a personal loan from a family friend prior to his freshman year that has since been paid back.

Pro Football Talk has since reported that the “family friend” is actually an NFLPA-certified agent, which opens a whole other can of worms and puts the remainder of Young’s college career in jeopardy.

However, as the late Billy Mays woould say, “but wait — there’s more!”

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reports that Young took the money to pay for his girlfriend’s flight to the 2018 Rose Bowl, but denies the PFT report that it came from an NFLPA-certified agent.

The issue that has led to Ohio State defensive end Chase Young being suspended indefinitely dates to December 2018, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told The Athletic, when Young borrowed money from a family friend to fly his girlfriend to California to attend the Rose Bowl. Young paid that money back in April, the person said.

Another person said the family friend from whom Young borrowed the money is not an agent or a booster. That would be significant in the NCAA’s eyes as it begins to sort all of this out.

If it turns out that Young really did just take a loan from a family friend to fly his girlfriend out to the Rose Bowl and paid it back, it seems curious that the NCAA would even care (okay…maybe not), but if the person involved is an NFLPA-certified agent, then it becomes a much larger problem.

Whatever the case may be, Young will sit out for at least one game and potentially more as the NCAA investigates. ESPN reports Ohio State is expecting Young to receive a four-game suspension.
