Chargers will not negotiate with Melvin Gordon until after season

Melvin Gordon won’t be getting a contract extension during the season.

Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said Sunday the team will not negotiate with Gordon during the season. That leaves him with the option of pursuing a trade or playing on his fifth-year option.

It’s a very clear line in the sand from the Chargers, and it means Gordon has a decision to make. He would be in line for $5.6 million in 2019 if he played under the option. He could continue holding out, as he has done through training camp. However, it doesn’t appear likely to get him what he wants.

Gordon’s other option is to seek a trade. If he is absolutely set on getting a new contract right now, that may be his only route.

Gordon rushed for 885 yards and ten touchdowns last season in just 12 games. He had his first and only 1,000-yard campaign in 2017.
